Unhappy HELP!! Keys, serial numbers and the ignition barrel.

Ok this is a new thread related to my previous thread http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...ght=biker+gods

I ordered some new keys through a Locksmith in Petone, I tried them this morning (with much fear & trepadation) only to find the ignition key doesn't work (the steering lock does - phew) it fits in the ignition, but won't turn the bike on I'm 99% sure I have the right serial number.

Does anyone know if the key serial number is on the ignition barrel?
If it's the right number than I can assume it's been cut slightly wrong and if it's not I guess I'll have to get a new ignition barrel.

Dont know about the numbers but it sounds like the key might just need a bit more buffing - take it back to the locksmith and they will probably clean it up a bit more and give it another go - your ignition might be a bit worn too.

    Oh, no, mate.

Sorry to hear it hasn't been sorted yet.

I've not ever seen a serial number on the ignition switch, but that could be because I wasn't being observant - we can only hope...

OTOH at least your steering lock is sorted. I don't recommend hot-wiring the bike to get to Uni, tho'.

I think (but don't know for sure) that it's on the body of the ignition, so You'll need to get at it to look. Ask the locksmith - they should know fer sure.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

It should be on the barrel, but you'll have to remove the barrel to find out.Remove the whole lock and take it to the locksmith, they can take it from there.Where did you find the number to make a new Key? (don't wanna read your other thread) Someone has most likely replaced the ign, that's why it's different to the steering lock.

If it unlocks the steering lock them it should be the correct cut for the ignition. I'm with Sels1. Buff, buff, buff.

Yeah thats what I thought I'd have to do - remove the barrel that is.

I got the serial numbers from memory - I had memorised the numbers b/c I had to look at my keys every time I rode. The steering lock & ignition keys are different b/c when it was stolen they had f*cked the original ignition & so a new 1 got put in. So this meant everytime I ride I have to look to make sure I was putting in the correct key, therefore the numbers are burnt into my brain...of course this being said I realise even my sharp mind can play tricks on me and I could possibly have the number wrong.

    Cheers
