The world famous Minginui-Matawai-Motu Midwinter Madness Ride is on 24-26 July.
The plan is to meet up at the Rangitaiki Pub on the Napier-Taupo road. There is food, beer, basic cabins & camping there for those who want to arrive Friday night. Phone them on 07 384 2803 to book yourself a bed.
More comfy accomodation, & extra bunks are also available 5km back down the road towards Taupo at the Rangitaiki Lodge. They have a couple of nice motel units, some tidy cabins & a bunkhouse. Call them on 07 384 2800 to book. As the Lodge bar usually closes at 8 the main gathering/meal/beers will be back at the pub.
8am Saturday we'll leave the Pub & head North along the Waipunga Rd across to highway 38 at Minginui then on through Waikaremoana, Wairoa, Tiniroto & a few backroads to my friend's farm, Journey's End Station, out the back of Matawai. We'll stay in the shearer's quarters which are quite modern & well appointed. BYO sleeping bag. If we are lucky Ann might even cook us dinner & get in some beer for us. Bring your sleeping bag, there are 20 beds/matresses there, any extras will have to bring a camp mat too.
EDIT 15/7: Ann has offered to cook us dinner on the Saturday night, those who have done the ride before will know that we are in for a treat, most likely spit roasted lamb &/or wild pork fresh off the station. The cost for the accomodation & meal will be $25, bring cash. Ann has also offered to get some beer in for us, any flavour you like as long as its Tui stubbies, please PM me your beer orders by Wednesday 22, & bring $15 per 1/2 doz cash to pay for it.
On the Sunday we'll head out to Matawai then off down the Motu Rd to Opotiki, then a couple more backroads & maybe some hot pools, then back to my place at Rotoiti.
Further details will be added to this post as we get more organised.
Remember this is a MIDWINTER ride. Based on previous MMMMM rides there is a 100% chance it will rain, a 50% chance of snow, a 75% chance it will be bloody cold & a 100% chance that all those mad enough to do the whole ride will have lots of fun. The route is all tar & gravel roads, nothing technical, some of the gravel is often fairly rough & muddy though.
