It may not have occurred to you, but if you did a defensive driving course and then sat your full M/cycle license - you could buy any bike you thought suitable. If you compare this to getting an exemption which would only be approved for certain bikes then the advantages to going straight to a full license should be obvious.

The defensive driving course is all about having the proper attitude, and understanding how to identify problems as they arise. It's nothing to do with "cars". Yes all the examples are with cars (no motorcycles mentioned at all) but if you sit around during the course and fume about it you will learn nothing.

I did the DDC and hated it. It was borderline whether it was worth the hassle. (personally)

    "Wow, Great advise there DB."

And i think the defensive course they are suggesting you take is something along these lines http://www.riderskills.co.nz/default...readyforsummer, most definately not aimed at 4 wheels?
This course would be great but its not available in CHCH

Man up, and just sit your full when it's time. You don't need an exemption.

I just rode my big block with a learners and kept my nose clean. Sat the DD course (piece of piss, met some cool young folk, great for a perve too) and got my full in no time. Rode without a license for thirty years! Getting it was easy, shoulda done it years ago but back then the fine was 25 bucks or something, so it wasn't an issue.

    Just do it.
