    Sad news 19:57 10/03/2009

A 40-year-old motorcyclist was killed when his bike and a truck collided in Waitakere, West Auckland, today.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the collision, which happened at 2.23pm at the intersection of Swanson Rd and Scenic Drive.

Inspector Chris Tate said the truck was travelling west on Swanson Road, and the motorcyclist was travelling east on Scenic Drive.

The truck was turning right into Waitakere Road when it and the motorcyclist collided. The motorcyclist was killed instantly, the truck driver was uninjured.

An unfortunate example of why anyone should take care if a truck is nearby.

Doesn't matter who is at fault in these accidents.

When I first started riding the best piece of advice I got was the treat all other road users like they're stupid no matter how many wheels they got.

Trucks handle so differently to anything else. Even if they can see you it doesn't necessarily mean that they can or will stop.

It's easily forgotten that trucks require that much more stopping distance and with such a large mass they have an equally large blind spot.

Enough of that. Just attended a family funeral yesterday but at least that was from old age.

Thoughts go out to family and friends of the rider.
