Man arrested in Hamilton after doing a runner

Man arrested after high speed pursuit
    New 8:38AM Sunday Mar 15, 2009

A 34-year-old man has been arrested following a high-speed chase in Hamilton.

Police were attempting to stop the man on a motorcycle about midnight on Friday when he sped off, Senior Sergeant Jeff Penno said.

The man reached speeds of more than 150km/h in the industrial area of Pukete but police abandoned the pursuit when it entered a residential area, he said.

A member of the public later saw the man on foot and alerted police.

Mr Penno said a police dog handler found the man in a gully less than 100m from his abandoned motorcycle.

A man will appear in Hamilton District Court next week charged with reckless driving, driving with a suspended license and failing to stop.

I heard that Police often give up the chase. I am just wondering why the member of the public felt the need to phone the Police (what had he done wrong) and also how did they Police know it was the same person?

They must love it when they catch one.

I wonder why the crazy fool got off of his bike? Must've run outta gas. Well, I guess meeting the Highway Patrol's friend pain will teach him not to go being a crazy fool again.

150? He must have been on a Hyo GT250. That's more of a low speed chase.

The person that phoned quite likely saw the criminal running away from his bike and figured something wasn't right. How did they know it was him? Something to do with the land shark tracking him from where he left the bike and finding him hiding in a gully a short distance away perhaps?

Land Shark. I like that description, but it should be "variable-control land shark" especially in the case of the Kerikeri constable!

    That's a good result.

Nobody got killed or injured, nobody crashed, and a dickhead speeding through a residential area at night got cuffed.

Top marks to the cops involved.
The greatest pleasure of my recent life has been speed on the road. . . . I lose detail at even moderate speed but gain comprehension. . . . I could write for hours on the lustfulness of moving swiftly.

Mostly they have a very good on-off switch, not too much variable control but a very well defined on mode and off mode.

Not quite as effective an "on-off" as desired, according to the plod who had the calf-muscle bite marks...
