Does your speedo have to be working in order for your bike to gain a WoF?
Does your speedo have to be working in order for your bike to gain a WoF?

Yes!
Mind you, it does not have to be accurate....
Diarrhoea is hereditary - it runs in your jeans
If my nose was running money, I'd blow it all on you...
I don't know how or if they checked mine at VTNZ.... they checked the Kilometres done, so as long as it's still showing that... might be worth a shot. I'm sure someone will have a theory on how they would check it, but they never rode my bike, so not sure how they'd know if the speedo was working or not.
when they put the front wheel on that spinny thing [dunno what its called, lol] doesnt that make the speedo go? ive done it once, but wasnt looking at the speedo at the time so dont know.

Imperative that it does work.

The WOF manual says - 'The speedometer must be in good working order and operate while the vehicle is moving forward'.
The road test (that ALL issuing authorities should perform) is the easiest way of checking it's operation.
Cheers guy's, as I thought...
It's nice to be right sometimes![]()

But don't...
I'd assume that wof issuing garages do, but the likes of OnRoad and VTNZ certainly don't. I'd also assume that the brake machine (the rollers with the fluid level/brake force readout) used for cars will show the speedo to be working, but it's not used for bikes.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?
To see a life newly created. To watch it grow and prosper. Isn't that the greatest gift a human being can be given?
So what happens if I am pulled up for speeding and tell the cops that I have no speedo are they going to ask who issued the warrant? What liability does the like of say On Road or VTNZ carry, assuming they passed the bike without a working speedo.
Note: I would also expect to receive a ticket for speeding but that's not what im trying to ascertain...

Exactly! What is supposed to happen doesn't always. Nobody road tested my bike at VTNZ and there were no rollers used either.
The speedo on my Hornet is well out due to the different sprocket on the front, it was out before we did that anyway, so if I get caught speeding and say, "well, my speedo was reading 100" and I got clocked doing 120... same thing? Nobody checked my speedo at VTNZ and I assume it wasn't checked the warrant before that either unless you're allowed to have a speedo that's out by about 10-20 kmph.
you could always look at an aftermarket speedo. I've got one of these and they're fantastic... http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Mo...-208686240.htm
you can adjust them for different wheel diameters and get top speeds etc. great for track days
plus they've got digital engine temp, tacho, air temp and more. I rate them very highly![]()
