Took the Motard model for a spin and it took a week to get the smile off my face, ended up with the 650 as it suited my needs better but I still wonder...

    Aussies love em

Their Magazines are still doing write ups on em

You will be impressed if you are looking for a small road legal adventure bike.
The SM version will definately make your freinds think you have a new lover if you buy one!
and the off road version will suffice if you have never ridden an 07 or later WR450.

They were a good bike 5 years ago but they arent ridden by serious dirt bikers now. They are 10kg overweight, they have a heavy front end and they are very tall for a heavy bike. with a tank full of gas they are pig in ruts.

    my 2c worth
Retired- just some guy with a few bikes......

Alot of framers are buying them, use them untill the knobblies are racing slicks, then give the air filter a clean.
Great motor (also fond in the Ltz400 quad) but over weight for any serious off roading.

Had my DRZ for about a year and a half, great trail bike, bloody reliable, plenty of grunt, will pull you up any hill, never had a problem with it and its 9 years old now............... but they are big and heavy and the suspensions not the greatest, I recently changed from the DRZ as I wanted something a bit lighter, yappier and with better suspension.

I guess you're another one that'll have to change their name then!

I've seen more DRZs on the road than off road of late. what with the SMs proving to be a super cheap way to motard and even the traily ones being used a lot for commuting. So to answer your question Daff. they seem to be pretty popular on the road and i think this is the case in aussie too. I've seen Police DRZ400s in Brisbane with lights and cop sticker kits and all, have photos somewhere.

However they don't seem to be very poular off road anymore.

yeah, hopefully I can come up with something more original than my current name !!

I've still seen a few on the trails, my mate just got one and he loves it, his is a 2002 model though and has upgraded exhaust etc.
I'm just trying to talk the DRZ up as I'm trying to sell mine !!

Man they are so easy to ride... I reckon you don't feel the weight unless you drop them/get stuck. Inspiring over tree roots, but lack confidence once you get up to speed/whoopee stuff. I've hopefully got a farmer coming to see mine soon, so I've put the original (slick) tyres back on - won't make a difference with the torque from that engine.
BTW I would love to have the money/time to upgrade the (front) suspension and see just how well one of these could go... just decided that I'm not quite at the DRZ 400 age... I hope
