    Piston kit, where from?

    Hey guys,

Looking to do the top end on my 99 RM250.
Just wondered where you guys would reccomend getting the stuff from?
Any specific kit thats better than others? Any to look out for?

Gonna do it myself, first time doing one but figure it can't be that hard.... Got all the tools etc and a bitta mechanical know how but is there anything to watch on these?

    Cheers

ProX piston kit, order it in from any motocycle dealer. Or try trademe.

Be careful doing it by yourself, there are afew technical bits to watch out for. Got a manual?

Follow the manual or an online tutorial, make sure the piston is facing the correct port, make sure gudgeon pin clips are on properly, dont leave any bits of shit in the barrel. Ask on here if you get stuck. Beats spending a fortune at the bike shop.

Make sure you check the barrel, it should be scratch free. After so many changes they need a hone. best way to check is to take it to somewhere that hones them and if needed get a very light hone. About $20-30 up here.

I thought that you should never hone a Nikasil cylinder?

Yes they can be honed. A lot of bike shops don't do them themselves but send them to certain places. It does get rid of small scratches like when sand goes through your barrel.

Engine specialists on the shore are very good. They also do re-sleeving along with other things.

From what I have read here they can be honed but I personally wouldn't let a hone within a hundred meters of a nicasil bore read this thread on Chamchains experiences! http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...t=26429&page=2

The hone marks are often as deep as the small sand scratches so very light sand scratches may aid ring seal by retaining the oil on the bore wall and therefore compression in some cases.
With an older bore with already worn nikasil, you may not have a lot left to hone and go through it. Especially if you measure your existing bore and it already needs the next size piston (there's often only two sizes in the nikasil bore) Also it has to be a special type hone that even some of the reconditioners may not have. The piston action on its own is enough to wear a bore without honing it and a shiny nikasil bore doesn't mean its glazed and stuffed they are not meant to look like cast iron bores. One of the fastest Kart engines I knew of was a mate that even had a curclip groove down his bore and it was there for the 3 years he ran that engine. Unless you are a racer that wants to last .5% performance and has a stock of new barrels in the truck, I wouldn't do it.

Just my 2c! But for me chamchains experiences have just confirmed what I have always been lead to believe.
