Bike, or home contents?
Home contents is easy.
Record all the serial numbers of all your stuff, and have proof of ownership. If possible.
Figure out what the maximum total cost of replacement would be if someone dropped a nuclear bomb on top of it. Get a home contents policy for that much.
I, for instance, just have a round $50K figure (I think...) and pay about $50 a month for that with AA Insurance. Covers theft, fire damage, leaving my cellphone on top of a car and driving off (which I recently claimed on), etc, etc. All good.
But, really, just call around the insurance companies, ask them to describe their policies, get quotes. You'll find out everything you need to know that way.
And if you're wondering about bike insurance, just do a site search - heaps of stuff here already on that topic.
