Xray showed I have broken a bit of bone off in a non load bearing area. So in a cast for 6 weeks.

Your bike build looks like it is progressing well.
Howie good to hear you are on the mend lucky the weather is not to hot with a cast on. Its a positive thing you and Aslan (Older and Bolder) riding on with broken bones. Take care and see you out there again soon.

Thanks for that - and they are all pretty much the same - but I am determined to return the original gearbox to "as new" so hopefully I don't ever need a spare!

My condolences to all the injured and hope the below helps you on the way to recovery.
A number of stars recently aligned.
I had always liked the look of the R80G/S right back from when it was released. Never rode one and now they seem like hen's teeth.
I bought a KTM 950 a few years back as a present to myself and although it was great on the road and a bit of gravel I was never going to have the balls or skill to ride it offroad.
To get into Adventure riding I bought an old DR650 and did a couple of rides. It ticked the boxes so I sold it a bought a newer one. It's a great bike in its way but it cries out for tweaking and is a true UJM with no phoaaar factor at all.
Anyway need to make some space in the shed and raise some funds so decide to sell the KTM. Second guy to express interest calls around to look at it and bugger me there he is on a tidy G/S. The usual chat ensues and a sale turns into a trade plus cash, well when something like that happens you just can't ignore it - it's meant to be.
Not sure the dear old thing is too happy to be moving house it broke down on me a mile from home on my first ride and I had to push it home. After a lot of fiddling it turned out (I think, I am never sure with electrics!) to be a dodgy kill switch. Loads of CRC and wriggling and hey presto brum brummmm. Yesterday went to the racing at Paeroa and got a flat just before the car park, could have been a worse place. Phoned a local tyre shop who wanted $250 to come in and fix it. Local bike shop inside the circuit said they could fix it. So back out to the bike wonder if the toolkit has all we need? It does. Puncture fixed with an old tube they had lying around, how much I ask $10 he says here's $20 I say. Good on you the custom shop in Paeroa! So we watch some racing and head home. It pogoes like mad at 50kmh but smoothes out by 80. So a bumpy ride but we are home a succesful day.
The engine has quite some poke and has 100 on the barrels so I think it must be more than a 800 in there, nice and smooth and sounds good too with that pipe. Front and rear are rock hard like a late seventies eyetie and I think would need to be looked at before any serious offroading and the front brake well something needs to be done to that before I go two up with luggage anywhere but to be fair the disc is pretty worn.
So all in all I am a happy camper. A new toy to play with and tweak. Think I will see what it is like to live with for a bit and then the DR maybe looking for a new home. So standby for all sorts of numpty questions from someone completely new to BMs.

Thank you it certainly seems well looked after.
Re engine size the previous owner told me that although it had bigger barrels on it he thought it had been sleeved down to 800 again. Anyway one day I will have a look inside and get to the bottom of it, right now I will just enjoy the smooth power.

Very nice G/S - pleased for you - I was lurking (dreaming) of your extremely tidy KTM 950 - pleased you got an outcome that works for you - cheers Aslan

    Excellent Stuff TB
Before you get too carried away & sell your DR take the G/S for a few cruisy offroad rides & see how you like it. You may want to keep the DR as a bush basher for those rides where you may break bits off the G/S.

If you are after some good info, the airheads forum on adv rider is excellent.

Your bike would look splendid with the older (but weaker apparently) peanut valve covers.

    G/s

Thanks very much Aslan. The 950 sure was tidy and should make the new owner very happy. Poor devil was off for a pre planned w/e trip then off to Aussie with work for the week so will be gagging to give it a good thrashing by the w/e. If anyone sees a black 950 blatting around north of Auckland this w/e it will be him!

Gman reckon you can still lead til I get the hang of the beast, we must get some gravel soon.

Curmudgeon it is indeed Von Trigger in all his glory.

Padmei due to my collection it really should be the G/S or the DR. If its that knarly then whatever I am riding I will probably be on my arse! Need more practice.

It's been sold. Not surprised either at that price.

Yes that is cool. After having the GB400TT tho I know how long you can ride one comfortably for tho.
There are quite a few nice airhead roadbikes on there - in fact there are heaps of every type of bike on there. If only I won lotto & could start my collection.
An FT500 would def not be in there tho

Another GS for sale on trademe for a good price. I know the owner of this one & he has a young family so can't get out riding at all.
