Source of the glittery flakes was a disintegrating bearing race, sludge is the rest of the bearing and the noise was the preceeding having their entropy reduced. Gearbox bearing very close to complete failure with gearbox break up almost inevitable if it had.

Motobins are out of stock of bearing kits for weeks (months?) so the R80GS is proving about as useful as the 2007 Dakar it replaced!

Fortunately the RD350LC I bought when I was 24 (27 years ago) has never missed a beat and, thanks to 4 years of disgraceful performance from BMW's new and old, it is busy again. Can't get them from one of the other suppliers, or prefer to wait for Motobins?

Unfortunate re the gearbox, but once that's fixed...

What we really need is a communal 'spare' for moments like these.

Did you see the solo seat & rack on Tme. See its dropped to a more reasonable $400

Convenience = husbanding my spare time - is important to me, so I really just want everything, from neutral switch, washers, driveshaft bolts etc. to come in one package from a specialist who knows what to supply, hence the wait.

Yeah, a shared quick change spare sounds like a great idea!
My 1992 R100RS got sold last week so I don't have an exchange one myself either!

Yes - but as the idea of a GS (or G/S) has always been that Debbie comes along as well, probably not what I need!
One of the solo riders needs to snap it up.

does the rack somehow bolt up to become an extension of the rearmost one?

    Yes...but I don't have a picture in my library.

Won't work with my tank (without modification), otherwise I'd be in...

Pretty sure oscar put up a pic of his on here. I saw them on for $800 & thought he was dreaming.
I'm thinking of fabricating a solo seat & rack that is fitted with a couple of quick releases for easy changeover.

I am keeping my eyes out down here for the elusive barn find so I can store away a supply of reconned & working parts - gearbox, final drive etc for that purpose. You can sure as eggs guarantee that they will sell if you never need them.

I bet one will turn up this week when i'm totally skint

Yup. It bolts to the end of the solo seat and clips in to the lock where the pillion seat fitted.

Solo seat linky. Won't work on your bike. Needs to be a Paralever

    I got mine from Boxxerparts:

    http://www.boxxerparts.de/xtcshop/pr...r--orange.html

I bought the orange single seat and the luggae rack and landed them for a smidgen over $600. They're not OEM, but very well made.

My first proper bike was a LC 250, like a swiss watch even with a race tune
