    Bean cans.....

it appears my Hall sensor has failed.Am prolly gonna try to replace just the sensor but am considering "updating" the whole bean can .
Has any one had any problems with the mechanical advance units?
What is the attraction of the motorad electrik unit the Americans seem so attracted to?

that thread prompted me to consider the motorad option(alpha) but it seems the only real difference is the advance is digital instead of the old spring and weight system. Is there some other secret I am missing.Even the hall sensor seems to be the same as existing

Ask EddieB I replaced the hall sensor in one for him he said it was going to be his spare. Advance Unit was as good as gold don't know how many Kms it had done. Hall Sensor is available from Jaycar approx $30 cheapest option. same sensor as used in most BMWs Oilhead uses 2 and I think the wiring failure is what causes them to fail. Alot of other car manufacturers Holden, Ford use them very reliable given the volume that is out there.

I am keen on the Enduralast ignition for a couple of reasons. It bolts on the front of the alternator so the original bean can and ignition can be left in place as back up. It is switchable for single or dual plug. ( mines dual plugged ) If its anything like there alternators it should be trouble free

Igor, yeah I have seen that thread already looks like a few pages have been added to it since I saw it last. I have given up on the r100 frame at this stage because with the 1100 rear swingarm, diff and rear wheel the center of the wheel doesn't line up with the steering head. I would have to get a special rear wheel made along with having to cut the alternator mount off the 1150 engine to fit in the frame and then make up adaptors to fit the USD forks I got etc etc. So I have started drawing a frame along the lines of the HP2 which a got a picture from the HPN website I figure it will be easier to start from scratch building a jig get a steering head turned up to match the forks I have and weld up a few tubes sounds easy. Still alot to sort out steering head angels etc some more talking to the engineers. I have a lot on at the moment with work but watch this space it want happen overnight but I am trying to make it happen regards GSers

BMWST, the problem with the wiring is with the oilhead models 1100 & 1150 mainly 1100 the hall sensors (2 of) are located on the front of the block on the end of the crank in this location they are subject to very high temperatures the wiring insulation even though it has a shield outer case cracks internally about every 4-5mm about 100mm up from the pickups. Any moisture gets in there they signal back to the computer breaks down. I replaced the sensors when I got the bike as one had failed and didn't realise the wiring was faulty looked good where I wired up the new sensors. The bike went for 6000 Kms before I was preparing for a trip I had washed the bike the day before got it out of the shed the next morning rode about 6 kms and that was the end of that weekend. I will try and dig out some photos but my computer crashed about 2 weeks ago and needed a new hard drive I still haven't recovered all my files yet. Anyway I will see how I get on. Good luck with your quest. Regards GSers AKA Gerard

is this applicable to the airheads too?...I might sheild the whole length of the wires in heatshrink and not just the new joints

Not sure if that applys to air heads. I was told it only applied up until 97 and as my bike was a 99er figuired I was ok However after a slight mishap involving a river it failed to start After that the wires were traced back and as Gerard has pointed out they were cracked further back up the loom due to heat. This allowed the water (Bloddy Tukituki river) to short things out resulting in the big no go
