Hi there Sidecar Bob - here's a link with some of the information you're after - the 1200GS spec sheet http://micapeak.com/bmw/gs/gs_1200.htm

Other resources are Adventure Rider - http://www.advrider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=3

    and UKGSER http://ukgser.com/home/

From your profile I gather you're a Lucky Man, soon to own a 1200GS - myself, I lust after them and KTM9xxs - whilst really needing to be happy with my perfectly functional and reliable 1150GS

I too lusted over the thruxton when I had theGB400. However as age creeps on the riding position isn't that comfy.
We were watching a movie the other nite where the cool sexy guy was riding one like in the ad above. When I exclaimed "airhead!" Mrs Padmei looked at me & asked how come my one didn't look as cool as that

I have however been offered another airhead needing work at a cheap price - don't tell Bmwrsnut cos he may come sniffing around.

Suspect that Mandy may feel certain of my important bits may be on the line if I moved on that.

NO 21" front wheel the only thing offered with a 21" front was the HP2 which is no longer in production. the diiference between the 2 is probably around 50kg of extra stuff.

Answer is slightly muddied by the varying spec levels. There are the base models, but in NZ for example, but I know the GSA comes with the two extra packages by default (not sure on the GS). ie, stuff like ABS, ESA, LED indicators etc etc.

    Main differences are:
    - 20L fuel tank on GS, 33L tank on GSA
    - crash bars standard on GSA, nothing on GS
    - pannier racks on GSA standard, nothing on GS (GS panniers don't need racks either)
    - cast rims for GS, spoked rims on GSA (but still tubeless). Identical rim sizes tho
    - small screen on GS, larger screen on GSA
    - GSA has an altered first gear, better for off road, rest of the gearing between bikes is identical
    - Higher seat heights on GSA than GS
    - More ground clearance on GSA than GS
    - handguards on GSA standard, extras on GS
    - GS is lighter than GSA

Certain things on the GS can be modified (even including replacing the tank), but realistically, once you want enough of the features of the GSA, just buy the GSA... they're excellent bikes
