hi Koko - no I won't be at the BMWOR Rally as much as I'm sorely tempted - I'll be at the Dusty Butt later in the month on my DR

You certainly have a fine collection of GS's now - your latest is the desirable / collectable PD - gotta be an investment

I can't have three bikes, so something will have to give. I might do it up a bit and sell it again, or sell the Basic. Not sure which way I'll go. So far it's a blind date. The 1150 is the least likely bike to go. I need that for commuting and general hooning around.

    I almost forgot.... Padmei...

Question Rear tyre advice sought - R1150GS (other than TKC80)

OK paging Shrek and any others who may have run dualsport tyres other than the preferred (yet costly TKC80) on their oilheads please

I know Shrek has run Mitas E07's to good effect and that's prolly what I'll buy from LMS and fit a tube

Any other experiences to share please with this Nana rider who uses his GS predominantly as a commuter / gravel roads tourer

Seasons greetings to all - ride safe and have fun - cheers Aslan

PS I have a new TKC80 for the front already in storage for when the current TKC exceeds what I regard as safe wear limits / loses its sharpness for use in deep gravel / shingle like the Haka / McKenzie country

Hello Steve, Congratulations on your recent birthday. re the rear tire any dual sport tire will do I like the Michelin Anake but if you want more than that try a Heidenou K60 however they are spelt they seem to be getting good milage out of them.

aye Aslan they now have a E07 that is tubeless for our bikes & the E10 is all so tubeless which is a very good off road tyre both are 150/70x17 & the fronts 110/80x19 but the Eo7's are better for what you're doing on the Gs, cya soon

Really depends what mix of riding you are going to do. Got a Karoo 2 on the front of my 1200GSA, for a knobbly it's not too shabby on the road either. Haven't run TKCs yet, for comparison.

Heidenau... I'm currently in the process of trying the K76... jury is still out, but doesn't look they'll get a good review... need more time to see however.

Next tyres I'll probably be trying are the Anakee 2.

On a bit of a tangent as usual but the R80 is on the road and had its first gravel run a couple of days ago and I have to admit to being very pleased with it. I'm running road tyres so didn't expect too much but it copes with the hardpack and shallow gravel well and only gets a bit squirrelly in the deeper stuff, nothing like the south island rocks you call gravel, the more dignified north island stuff.
The rear slides controllably but without a slipper clutch it's not quite the same for throwing into corners.... there isn't much power to power slide with either, it's more a genteel wiggle of the arse end. The front is great, the brakes are progressive and when you lock the front it just slides around in the direction you are pointing, none of this trying to high side you, very civilised, gets a bit messy at anything over 100 tho as the front end struggles for grip a bit.
It's great for standing on the pegs too, I feel like a proper adventure rider now!

    Next, find some mud.

Sounds good Iain - those old airheads are great eh - I used to have an R65 before I got an R100GS, R11XXGS's - the R65 (twin Koni rearshocks) was very good in gravel - look forward to seeing you at the Dusty Butt - cheers S

    Carb rebuild time

My "new" R80GS was only returning 40 mpg with gentle riding. It has allegedly had the carburettors rebuilt this year but this economy suggests maybe not very well.

Ordered the Bing #6 kit (everything up to and including new floats) on the 20th and this arrived this week. Whatever may be wrong or worn, this will make it good.

Love the way these come in a long plastic wrap with compartments for each component.

Have done this a half dozen times over the years but not recently and always find it nerve wracking. Too many tiny overtightened or peened threads and tight O rings to get over sharp edges. The small hammer is for removing and fitting the float pivot, not wacking the carb! Even found the tiny drift I made out of a nail years ago to ease this job!

Right carb finished this afternoon without any disasters. Left one awaits the new year (tomorrow). Please, please, please let this go smoothly. Some close moments today with over tight screws - had to use a stone to tweak a scewdriver for a perfect fit for maximum drive without damage in one case.
