Looks nice but why cover the plate, is it dodgy?

Covering plates is common practice, to stop the rego being used to trace the bike to an address. I've sometimes thought our posting photos with plates uncovered leaves us simarly exposed

No - the red 1993 NZ new R80GS advertised recently by Ray Holmes at Mount Motorcycles. Fit a G/S tank and headlight/instrument binnacle and I guess you then have a Basic!

He will sell my 1992 R100RS Last edition for me", on behalf, so there is space in the garage.

After three years of grief and ruined rides with my 2007 Dakar it will be good to be able to get back into the big South Island rides, with Debbie on the back, during 2012. How is that for progress, right back where I was in 2000 (except I have progressed to Paralever I suppose).

Nope. Here's a poor picture of a Basic. Blue frame, white paint, G/S tank & seat, & slightly more robust version of a G/S subframe. No rear rack on the subframe. Paralever suspension, & came with unpainted peanut valve covers. Came with the W/P rear sports shock, & white painted Marozochi front forks.

The T/Me bike a paralever ('88-'89) before they went to the roobars. Actually the blue & white version of the Bumblebee (they also came in red). That one was in Akld I think. I looked at it on T/me before I got the KTM. Remember the painted barrels, & the fact it was imported from the UK.

No it is not. There were only about 3000 Basics assembled. They were a parts bin special put together 1996. I heard that about 20 came to NZ but didn't sell due to the high price. NZ Bike bought them as rental bikes. Mine is one of those. I suppose being the last of the airheads makes them a bit rare, but I don't think they'll have an advantage beyond that. I am just happy if it doesn't depreciate.....much.

This one was part of a BMW display in Garmisch, Bavaria.

This one is my favorite modified Basic

and this is my one, with the small tank fitted.

Cheers for clearing that up. i didn't think it was but it looked somewhat different from most paras i've seen. It was the white screen & instruments that looked odd.
I love those peanut covers - pity they don't make tuffer ones.

While we're all here... My front collector pipes are rusted thru & cracked. My local bike shop can get a NZ made Y pipe from Muzzys (?) mufflers for about $150 which I thought was pretty good. Except the pipes are for the G/S' I think as they are on the catalogue for 85-89 (I think). Anyway my question is, are the earlier pipes different from the para pipes or should I look elsewhere?

PS I think the basic is a very cool looking bike & runs a close second to the Helmet Schek bikes

    A small project

Not a GS but I'm posting it in here cause it's my new "all roads" bike for those lazy afternoon explores, a few things to fix first as it's been in storage for 12 years, I'll let you know how it goes... 83 R80 RT

That was quick :-). Congratulations. It looks to be in good nick. Watch out for scope creep, it almost got me once or twice.

I think you need to use the G/S headers as well?. The Para muffler would still fit. There was a discussion on this in the UKGSer site a short while ago on collectors, & also here, and here.

You can't just weld a patch on?

Think the Y pipe you are looking at is a Musket..

Good score on the barrels & pistons

Here's a blurb on the basic,

    http://w3.micapeak.com/bmw/gs/gs_basic.html

and just to confuse Padders when he thought he had all the models figured out, there's also a blurb there on the Kalahari.
