The neutral switch is just sticking. You could just try changing the gearbox oil before you replace it.

The switch is at the bottom (middle) of the gearbox, behind the rear engine mounts. An 'easy' way to get at it is to remove the rear engine mount studs, take out the engine spacer, & its behind that. Bit of a PITA to replace it though.

Thanks. Yes, I read your posts...Much appreciated. I am a bit lost at present, I have asked nicely for someone to walk me through the process. I am a visual person, learn alot more by watching it being done. So....I have asked eddie...we will see. Oils/fluids, I would like to see it done. I know my way around a KTM and Te610e and the DR, but this thing scares me a little, even though they are a simple bike....Jus don't want it to seize of leave a frikkin big pool of oil on the floor somewhere..
Your posts and others have sort of made me a little wary, although helpful in part. ....(I gotta stop reading so much)......

I bastardised mine & got rid of as much as I could bmw electrically wise- don't get me started on the stupid wiring on these bikes. I haven't had a lot of luck with my neutral switches since i replaced the old ones with new ones. i wonder if they had a batch of bad switches? I can pick neutral now by the change in engine note.
Anyway i don't have a clutch switch or neutral lockout - of course the only time I have ever started it in gear was when nutso was around
They also have a stupid relay that knocks the headlite off when you push the starter- FFS.
anyway don't listen to anything I say - I'll lead you wrong. keep it stock, replace what you need to & above all worry about every new noise

I was being facetious Everytime I go riding I seem to hear a new bloody noise. It wasn't till I met up with nutso (boxabits) & philthy phil that I realised the whirring hammering box of death sound is actually common.

can you live with the way it is for a while? I think like Nutso it would be a real pita to replace in situ.

Once it has warmed up and I finally catch it after shaking across the garage floor , it rides nice and sounds great! Especially when I put the foot down. It growls....
But you are right, you are always listening for sounds out of the ordinary when riding.....As I have a couple of old bikes, if they be quiet, then maybe I need to worry?

Love the smell of pipe tobacco....My Grand Dad smoked them... As for the ride photo, nice work, but I bet she comes down with a thump!

I change the oils every 3-5k kms, & the oil filter every 2nd change. Remember that it's air cooled, so the engine goes thru a great temp range. Oil is cheap - 4T Castrol, or any 10w-40 dino car oil with lots of zinc in it (SG rating, nothing later). Don't use synthetic - the seals will start to leak. Gearbox & diff GL-5 80/90w every 5-10k kms dependent on water & dust contamination.

Gearbox and Diff oil - Where do you source this? Best price etc? I got the 4T Castrol in my garage, there must be a few different versions as mine is semi synthetic 15w-40 4T Castrol. Dino oil is what I look for SG...I found the guy who stocks the filters...Thanks.

The Mahle OX 36 filter is the one you are looking for. There are 2 sizes of filter - for bike with & without an oll cooler. These were then divided into straight & hinged. The hinged ones were originally for the faired RT & RS bikes, but BMW have since rationalised the filter stocks. So now the OEM oil filter ones are all hinged.

I just buy the gearbox oils at my local Repco. They occassionally do a percentage off everything, & if I am organised I'll stock up then.
