    Electric Start 300exc

    HI all

bet you can guess what this thread is gonna be about!

    yip, e-start aint working
pulled it all apart greased it all up as per KTM bulletin but still no luck

to me it sounds like a tired battery as it turns over really slow

so i charged it up, chucked it back in and hit the buttom
it turned over well maybe 4 or 5 times and that was it, back to slow turning flat battery sound

i have only just bought bike and the dude i bought it off spent thousands on the e-start and batteries but he reckoned nothing seemed to work!
does this sound like a dud battery?? or a battery that isnt powerful enough?

going to tussock buster this weekend so will see if anything changes after those long loops.

    cheers

Mine worked for 6 months from new, then guurrrr.

Replacement parts under warranty but 6 months later(well alot less actually)
same crap.Tried new battery etc etc. still no luck

I've since taken the starter out completely. Makes a whurring noise like the bottom end has gone. But saves some weight.

All the internal gears on the engine side are buggered.

I thought mine was the Friday bike?

They certainly had more problems with the 07 estart, I think they put in a better bendix in the 08's, but is it actually turning the bike over? Or is not even engaging?

put a set of jump leads on it that will tell you if it a f-----ed battery if it work fine with leads on another battery just make sure it the right voltage ie dont put a 12 volt on a 6. If the battery is charging properly it should last longer than that and if new ones keep going flat check to make sure system dosnt have a voltage leak thats drailing it.

Sounds more like the battery is stuffed then.

I know you had problems with yours, but there seamed to be less problems with the 08 than the 07, I haven't had any probs with mine, I just service it regurally and it is still going strong.

I thought they had gone to a stronger bendix spring for the 08 and even stronger again for the 09 to stop the free wheeling issues that some have, is that what problem you had?

Got a mate with a '08, the bushes are buggered on his, new ones are heaps, he's tried everything to just replace the bushes including contacting the manufacturer, no luck so far.

    Oh he's a sparky.

Yeh I got it fixed with the stronger spring but still no luck. twice!!

Once the drives start to wear then this inceases the resistance and the poor ole battery goes "this is too hard".

I'll have to wait till I get a new bike before I get to push the button. Quite peeved really as starters have been around for years yet they couldn't get this right.

The first batteries on the 300's were undersized and tended to crap out quicker than expected... Try jumping it, and if it works replace with a higher capacity one.

Had the same problem when I first got my bike. Battery would take a charge and seemed to be all good but this kept happening. Turns out it wasn't a strong enough battery for bike this big. Put an HD one in and no problems since.
