    Filtering at give ways

Do you guys filter up to the front of give way signs? especially in heavy traffic?
Are there any laws that go with this also?

Depending on mood and if there is space at the end on my side of the white lines, then yes and I use my indicators. You can't overtake the lead vehicle at pedestrian and train crossings.

I filter at give ways etc if traffic is heavy. I like to have seen the light turn red so i have an idea how long I've got until the cagers start a'driftin between lanes.

I filter and split anywhere except on median strips and turning-right bays (illegal!). Be careful if the front car is turning - go around the opposite side of him if you can, either be quicker than him (by a lot!) or wait behind him. Watch out for pissed-off motorists doing dangerous things - you will irritate a lot of people.. (cry me a river) so make sure you are long gone so they cant chuck the tomato sauce bottle at you.

Beware the stale red light.. If you filter to the front of the queue and lights go green before you get there, you will have to make a gap to get back in - can be tricky if cars close up on you.

    Have fun - be careful!

I have done, yeah. I stay on the outside of their turning radius though. Like if they're turning right, I'll stay on their left.

Oh ok, cause earlier that day i filtered up to the front of a give way were the traffic we were turning into was stopped. I got to the front and paused for a sec, then "thud" i thought WTF?? Turned around and some dude rammed the side of the bike!!! I thought i might of been doing something illegal so took off as i didnt seeing any damage to my mates bike.
Now i know i wasnt doing anything illegal i should have kicked his car before leaving
He lives somewhere round me so next time i see him i might abuse him
Now that i know i wasnt doing anything wrong i better tell my mate what happened lol

Toldya! You will fuck people off doing it, but that is just stiff titty for them - its not against the law. If some cunt rams you, just put your bike on the stand right in the middle of the traffic, and wander around to his drivers door and have a wee talk about it. Leave helmet and gloves on.

Nelson region is fab because most stops and giveways split and merge before and after most lights, giveways and roundabouts so me just squeezies up the middle and politely merge thereafter. Sweetas.

I filter everywhere if traffic is slow/stalled, thats the main reason I got a bike. Otherwise may as well be a sucker in a cage.

By queing you are contributing to congestion (which most cagers are too thick to realise).

In other countries they tolerate you and let you in and actually move over to the kerb and out to the centre to let you filter up the middle.... NZ drivers seem to be OK but as others have mentioned they do get a little pissy and try to "get you back" by various means like verbal abuse and revving hard like a boy racer. Pathetic really, just dumb drivers. Just concentrate on the light turning green / break in traffic and blat off first laughing.

Is the rule so long as the traffic is stationary then filtering is legal in NZ??

Filter where-ever you feel it is safe to do so, its half the reason you ride a bike in traffic...... to get places faster!

I ride along Rockfield road heading south, when I get to the end there is a give way to turn right into Mt Smart Rd. The traffic line up to turn right and tend to sit to the right of the lane, so I come up to the give way on their left. It is an interesting intersection in that you have to give way to the straight through traffic from the right and the right turning traffic from the left - but not the straight through traffic from the left, because they have their lane for going straight through and you have yours to turn into. At this intersection there are many retards that will sit there giving way to all the straight through traffic coming from the left, despite having a separate lane to use.

I split through to the give way, to the left of the front car. If they go then I go along side them and merge in behind them. If they sit and wait for a car going straight through from the left and there are no cars that I have to give way to then I just go and leave them to sit waiting for traffic that they don't have to wait for.

I have split up to the front of the give way at a roundabout (two lanes approaching the Ellerslie Motorway interchange roundabout from the Penrose side) and then gone through and split to the front of the on-ramp lights, then went with the 2 cars on the green. The traffic from the motorway interchange roundabout was queued back to the roundabout on Gt Sth Rd in both lanes - I saved a shit-load of time.

At other give way intersections I will split or not depending on the intersection & traffic. I always judge each situation on its merits and decide what I think is safe to do. Commuting in Auckland on a bike/scooter can save you a huge amount of time compared to driving a car!
