You could just hold the bike upright for a few moments near the end of filling it while standing beside it too you know.

It's interesting that people who fill the bike up while sitting on it can always find reasons to justify it. I've tried it - it was 'kn awkward. You have to get off to pay anyway, so what's the big deal?
I've never slopped petrol on myself while standing next to the vehicle, but I have slopped it on the tank or down the side (in a car/truck). Nice to have that on your pants...
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

Petrol stations get a lot of petrol drive offs these days.
It's a pain, but I now understand why they prefer prepay.

To me it sounds like more, that the Service stations think that everyone who pulls up on a motorcycle to get fuel and stays on their bike while fueling up is a suspected ride of petrol thief, yet to me its the best way to get as much petrol in your tank having the bike completely upright instead of on a slight lean.
Most service stations have a sign up at the entrance saying to take helmet of before entering shop and yet 9 x's out of 10 I go into the shop part to pay for fuel with my helmet still on my head and have never had any 1 tell me to take it off.
Next time it happens to you about being asked to hop of your bike while fueling up ask attendant what the reason is for it. Then you will know the reason why they ask you to do so.

I agree - the only time I filled the bike up while still on it, was awkward as hell!!

I don't have a center stand but I just lean it over a bit - if I can be bothered! Otherwise I'm not that fused.. I'm more worried about not spilling in on the paint!!!

I think the main reason they'd execute the rule would be in case you were doing a runner.. Just as we assume every cager is out to get us, the attendants would assume everyone is out to steal gas... If you were sitting on ya bike and with ya helmet still on ... what would it look like to a non-biker?

Be it right or wrong - that's just the way it is....

I looked at the attendant in his cage and he got on the speaker "Please get off the bike before you fill it"
It is there right to set and enforce whatever rules they like!

It is your right (and your money) to take your business (and money) elsewhere!

I always fill up while sitting on my scooter, they never say anything at my regular. I always fill up at the same station unless I am out of town, because I have no hassles with them and somewhere else there might be twats!

ditto. if its massively busy, i move up to a park [removing helmet etc first and walking the bike across the forecourt]

the one thing i hate about my local shell is the forecourt. the pumps have a bitch of an angle to allow the spills to drain away... but it means on a bike that it feels like its going to tip over. so now, i have to try and get a pump on the same side as stand. otherwise i freak when hopping off that its gonna fall.

Been that way for years, next time you fill up check the little stickers near the pumps, when I first started in a station the boss gave me a run through of the rules and one of them was not straddling the bike, another was no transmitters (this was pre cellphones) and we used to ask the police to turn off theirs before we filled, oh and you had to have a certificate to fuel LPG vehicles.
Its not the destination that is important its the journey.

still do. we werent allowed to fill lpg bottles or cars till wed "passed" the pathetically easy "test" that any dunce with .5 of a brain could complete, specially with the guy who doled it out repeating himself 5 or 6 times in the form of a stutter: "o, o, ah, ah, ah," from which hed get to his point, then hed go back to what he was talking about 5 mins ago, including the stutter. at times, i had to stop myself from mocking his gravelly voice when he showed up on site, lmfao.
