Help - question about making road legal.

Hey guys, first of all id like to apolagise , if i posted this in the wrong forum, but was in a rush.

Il try make it breif, looking at a bike that is on trade me at the minute, Its a off road honda, but it has front indicators, back indicators etc. but no mirros.
    it isnt reg'd or wof'd.
but at the bottom of his listing it says " Plates are on hold" , in order to get plates doesnt it need to be registered? just wondering if i did get this bike , if id be able to take it on the road ( legally ) lol :P

If it says plates on hold it is already registered but fees are not current so you would have to get a wof 1st. Ask if the bike is up to wof std, apart from mirrors obviously, then you will know what is needed!

It has the plate still on it so ask the no so you can do a proper check. Make sure it is not stolen or has money owed etc.

The different levels of regoed bikes (not worrying re the WOF):

    1. A bike that has current paid Rego. Ride away.

    2. A bike that has a lapsed Rego. Less that a year ago meaning that as long as you get a WOF for the bike inside 12 months from when rego lapsed you can pay the new rego and you are away (the old owner will have to pay for the time up until the bike became registered in your name).

    3. Bike that has Rego on hold. The owner has put the rego on hold as he is not using the bike and does not want to pay for rego, but it will not be taken out of the system. You get WOF and you pay Rego from the day you want to put on road and all sweet.

    4. A bike that has a lapsed rego that is over 12 months ago. The plates have to be given back and you will need to get a VIN done (you might be able to use the old one if lucky). but as long as you have old plates and the bike has been in the system not too long ago it is a straight forward thingy. A little expensive but not a big hassle. As long as bike is up to WOF standard U be ok. U will need to make sure that the bits that are fitted are all to regulations: All lenses have to have a blasted number on them telling the inspector that they are up to spec etc.

    5. A bike that has been in the system long ago (normally black plates) and has been totally deleted from it. Tends to be bikes that last had Rego 10 or more years ago. Same process as 4. But if you come across a tricky inspector he will make your life hell.

    6. A bike that has no plates, no VIN number and no proof that it has been in the NZ system. In worst case you will never get it Regoed. In best case you will ask someone who knows how to get the bike in to the sytem (like me...) and you be sweet.

    7. A bike that was never OK'd to be a road bike in NZ. You are in deep shit. If you only want the bike for offroad use dont loose sleep. But if you want her legally on the road you are outta luck (if you dont know how to circumnavigate the system...) Can get costly.

There you have it. Now you need to figure out what the state of that bike is.

May the bridges I burn light the way.
