Where to do my Defensive Driving?

I've just passed my restricted, and being over 25 (well over) I wanted to reduce my restricted period to just 3 months....

The only place that I can find that does bike related "approved" Defensive Driving courses is Riderskills... and there isn't one till May..

I believe that I can probably just go on one of the car oriented ones, and use that as part of the application.... however, my thought was, if I'm paying for this, it may as well be something useful to me ?

Any suggestions where I can go ? (be polite ! )

riderskills does the approved streetalk course for motorcyclists. 190 bucks, course is spread over two weeks I think. Next on is in may. Or just do an aa defensive driving course.

whats the magical transition like? Is it some sort of awesome transformation...you know when people turn twenty five and develop some sort of special skill leading to them having a 9 month licence system rather than the eighteen month one for under twenty five.

I better remember to have a camera when I turn 25, to capture the moment. lol

Without trying to jack the thread, can anyone advise whether if you've already done one of the aforementioned AA Defensive Driving courses (back when I sat my 1R) whether or not it will count for my 6R -> 6F?

To be honest for a saving of 3 months I wouldnt bother. Bit different if it was 6mths off a 18mth term. I did the car dd course and its arse - but i did allow me to get my bike full earlier. Save ya $$.

From what was posted in another thread, if you are over 25, you can use a certificate from a DD course for both licenses. But if you are under, the "at least 6 months after you get your R" applies. Which means no, unless of course that is true for you.

you have to be careful as some aa offices wont accept defensive driving certificates from ages ago, not sure why but quay street aa told me that when I was enquiring about it.

Im doing the riderskills one in May, already booked my place in it. I did a car one a few years ago and Im hoping the riderskills one will be more bike orientated.

And yea I agree, its only 3 months for you, If I didnt do it I wouldnt be able to get my full until Dec.

Correct me if I'm wrong it isn't 3 months from when you do the course to when you can take your full.

I passed my restricted on the 2nd April, have booked my DD course in May and am assuming I can take my full on 2nd July at the earliest.

Yep, I can do it in May,,,, I just wanted to see if I COULD do it before then, as much to get it out of the way as anything else !

It looks like I'll be booking on the Riderskills one for May then!

I did an AA one ... and it was fine .. I drive a car as well as ride .. and found that although I was with a pile of kids I still got some ideas and skills from it.

Really, don't bother.
I have a DD Cert, and was told it is invalid (I did it 20 years ago) BUT, the course is exactly the same, even checked the course content!

Why sit in a classroom for 8 hours with a bunch of hoodie wearing yoof, all talking about their blow off nipples, intercharger thingies, 12 inch subs, shiny exhausts and 700+HP skylines they'll be driving on their learners...?

The riderskills course IS for bikes, however long the wait, i've heard it's good.

On the other hand, there is no substitute for miles on the road, so sit on the restricted for another 3 months and enjoy.

I agree with what you are saying about the miles... however, I'm an impatient man at the best of times.. I am also VERY sensible on the bike... and will continue to be so regardless of a DD course, or full license.

The reality is, I've got the Hyo GT250 at the moment, and I fancy a change... (don't get me wrong, the bike has been amazing for the last 6 months and I would highly recommend to anyone learning....)

I would like to have a larger bike (and we're talking 600 here not a 1200 beast) sooner rather than later.... I've recently increased my commute significantly (was 8k each way, now 35 each way), and also have to travel to customer site (can be 100+ K) occasionally...

I guess in my case, it's a matter of, "am I prepared to pay the $300 to reduce my restricted to 3 months from 6 ?"... and I have to say, yes I am.

I did one of the AA type courses and found it usefull to refesh my skills,(or lack of) had done one 20 years ago...

I thought it worth while, even tho it wasn't bike specific, esp the outcome
of legally being able to ride my bike.....

Fair call, I was doing 130Ks a day on a GN250, so much easier on the RF...AND, even if you only learn one thing on either course it's got to be worth it.

I'm the same as Sly - Guy, fancy a change from the cbf and looking to get upto a 600 as soon as I can . Have done 12000k's in the last 9 month's and the 250 is starting to feel a little strained on the daily commute.

Looking at a ER6-N or sv650. Like the new XJ6's but probably out of my price range.....

Would love a Triumph but thats definately out of my price range.....
