In all seriousness, Auckland peds are bonkers & play on the fact that you don't want to hit them more than they care about you hitting them, never seen that anywhere like Auckland!
    You're doing it wrong.

Buy a cheap, dinged car like my beast of a old Nissan (Damn you Renegade Master for letting it get stolen!) to use when you need to drive around.

No longer do you feel the urge to stop for any pedestrians. Plus the suspension is soft enough that you hardly feel them under the wheels.

    Too right.

Case in point - I got T-boned on the peddly by a woman pushing a pram a couple of weeks ago.

She'd stepped out through some stopped traffic (30m from a zebra crossing, but of course it was too much hassle to actually use it) without checking both ways. The possibility that a bicycle might have been overtaking the stopped cars never entered her head.

Pedestrians'll be the death of me one of these days. Forget charging cyclists for rego, how about making walkers take licence tests before they're allowed out?

Got one in a similar way just this last week. Asian lady carrying her baby stepped out into the moving traffic to be hit by my big moped. Then had the bollocks to moan at me for hitting her with my mirror. FFS.. if she was a bit taller, I'd have seen her splitting through the parked cars.
It's only when you take the piss out of a partially shaved wookie with an overactive 'me' gene and stapled on piss flaps that it becomes a problem.

Definitely better off in a crapper. Used to get given the fingers, sneered at & general jealousy in the BMW. Stupid tall poppy syndrome
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded

    Pedestrians provide very little traction.
I ran one over a few years ago - did everything to avoid her, tooted the horn, slowed, swerved, braked, etc. but at the last minute she turned 180 degrees but spun to her left so she was facing AWAY from me the whole time, then stepped directly into my path. I hit her right in the leg, she went down, and so did the bike. I was wearing most of the gear apart from business slacks (I was only on a short trip to have lunch with my wife), so apart from a very slightly grazed knee, was uninjured. The pedestrian, OTOH, was kinda fukt: leg busted in two places, had to spend a week in hospital, and had to (presumably) pay for all the damages (about $3k worth).
Of course, I felt bad about injuring someone, but it wasn't my fault. It was exactly one block from the central police HQ (and an ambulance bay), so it was very convenient.

    Hope she learned her lesson.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

    Just a thought....

Has anyone ever done a documentary or offered the media something on the sad abilities of NZers behaving the way they do pedestrians/driver/riders... I should be proud to be a kiwi, but often I am not.. I am embarrassed at the lack of driving skills, and courtesy in this country, having driven in England & Germany.

People driving in the OVER taking lane on the motorway ...at 90km someone once told me it was the fast lane... GO Figure... any lane can be fast... usually for me its the inside lane.

PS Admittedly I live in the smaller Auckland area... I AM NOT A AUCKLANDER... FRANKLINITE!!!!

Ha i went to LA and they got it all funny there. Pedestrians get right of way always due to people gettin sued up thier asses (this isnt the donkey 1 is it?
) for hitting them reguardless as to who was at fault. So therefore if you even stop near the side of the road while walking to look at something(obese people) the traffic will stop to let you cross. this was of course very confusing but could also be manipulated to be fun.

    But hey they were American...

why did the o/p person try to slide the rear out? was this to create a larger front face to hit the old dude with?

If you have a mac, push option-e followed by the character that needs the accent. A grave is entered via option-`

    Voilà, rosé!
The greatest pleasure of my recent life has been speed on the road. . . . I lose detail at even moderate speed but gain comprehension. . . . I could write for hours on the lustfulness of moving swiftly.

When I came to Auckland 2 1/2 years back, I though I was a really bad pedestrian and was trying to behave. I was shocked how fellow workers have no respect or regard for the road and its users. Clearly I was not as bad as I had thought.

Speaking of France, pedestrians get an on the spot penalty fine for not crossing in the right place. I believe the Aussies are pretty strict too.

I suspect that a documentary about the dangerous behaviour of Auckland's pedestrians would be very popular all over the world.
