they started in 04 so for 3000 he might be able to afford a completly fucked 04 250r. wont find an x for that price
Think YZF or WR, depends on what he wants to do, some goodies on trademe
Why would you ride that long and that gnarly stuff if you don't have to, Its what we do, we love it.

ok cheers.
In that case we'll say he's looking at 04s. Forget about the price (I know i can convince him to spend more lol)
What's the difference between the '04 250 X and the R. Gear ratios the same? both 5 speed? Cams, piston, power, trip meter etc etc all info appreciated

R is the Motocrosser ie no stand,no lecy leg,no trip meter etc etc etc
X is the trail version with all the frilly bits and weighs more with less power cant remember how much i was surpised when i heard how much it was
Even on the old ones if you dont race serious and you wanna just go do the odd club day and smoke everyone on a big old 5hundy it great and if you get beaten you have a handful of excuses
the X is more you enduro / trail the R is your MX, but there are some things you can do to the X to give it a bit more bark ( power) like the R

yeeeah, cheers fellas. I'm really interested in knowing how different the internals are. He's gonna trail ride it with us and we pretty much all ride 450 MXers but he's a learner who has an old XR250 at the mo'.
I'm just trying to figure out if the X is worth the extra they seem to be asking for them and how trail rideable the R is gonna be. If the gear ratios are different or the handling characteristics ie different fork angle or something, then i'll suggest he get the X. But if the R just has more power, weighs less and doesn't have a stand, a trip meter and a headlight then we'll look at Rs for him

electric start too..., i think the engines are practically the same, but the R engine is updated every year wheras the X's engne is updated every few.
the X has tamer cams and timing and pipe etc, both have 5 speed boxes, the X has softer suspension stardard.
the X 250 is about 103kg dry and the R 250 is like 93kg dry?

we may just go where no ones been
There must be some reason why the R needs a rebuild at or LESS than 40 hrs running ...
And the X can go mid 100's before needing one.
Doubtfull you will find one for anything near that budget
Im only repeating what we were told on saturday morning at counties honda, when we were looking at the new x and r.
Feel free to take it up with them
go for an r, yes it doesnt have the xtras like a lecy leg etc, but for some learning i think it would be better it would really teach him to ride harder and make him stand more vrs having an elcey start arm chair.
Sam (booom's X) goes well, but to make it go as good as an R, he had to do an electrical mod, change the cams, change the exhaust, open the airbox up and alter the jetting to R jetting. I think that was all of it. But at the end you get a bike that is 10kg hervier with electric leg that is more expensive to buy than a R in the first place. So I'd only reccomend one if the electric start is really inportant to him. Oh and the suspension is really soft so if you mate is anything over 70kg he will find it rides like a marshmellow. If he already has an XR250, it will not be much of an upgrade. Tell him to harden up with his right leg and get an R!!! LOL
