does it have to be a Honda, I got my 06 RMZ for $4500 which I thought was a good price. it just had $1400 spent on top end. I was having doubts about riding an MX on trail rides, but the more time Ive spent on it, the more i love it.

Why would you ride that long and that gnarly stuff if you don't have to, Its what we do, we love it.

i think just the nature of riding you do between the enduro vs the MX speaks for its self on the rebuild front
well everyone says i ride it like a 2 stroke. and it eats valves. pistons all good though. normally wouldnt take it that high but cant be fucked with another bill as its for sale lol

Im only repeating what we were told on saturday morning at counties honda, when we were looking at the new x and r.
Feel free to take it up with them
Sorry mate didnt mean to sound like a dick, just everyone makes out that bikes gonna blow if you take it over 30-40. you can safely get to 70-80,there will just be a small loss in power but def. not worth the price of a top end in my books

differences im aware of - as an owner

    flywheel on X is heavier
cam is different, x more tame
ignition maps different, pink wire mod fixes this
airbox on the x is very closed up
    electric start
    plush trail suspension
headlight & odometer which break the plastic surrounds of whenever you crash
i believe barkbusters are a factory item on the x
    x has smaller main jet
x has longer header to help with bottom end power
x has shit exaust that is either quiet and restrictive factory or loud and shit opened up
x has tail light and coolant reservour
x has long range fuel tank and reserve
    x has side stand
x has bash plate thingees on both sides
x has heavier engine casings for more knocks
x has side entry clip air filter access

    mods ive done
    pink wire ignition mod
    opened up top of airbox
    R header
    FMF 496 muffler
    R cam
    R jetting
CR250R tripple clamps & numberboard to remove headlight, odometer & brackets without grinding or cutting up original clamps

standard, they are gutless as. possibly slower than an xr250

with the mods, goes as hard an an R, but has an electric leg, still a bit heavier.

    oh, its for sale too

Awesome, cheers boom that info helps heaps, i knew there'd be stuff i hadn't thought of and the lack of a coolant reservoir is the only thing there that may be an issue for him, He gets stuck on stuff and will boil it but that'll just teach him not to get stuck hopefully lol. He wants elec start but we can talk him out of that too

Cheers everyone else for your points too, Oldguy you raise a good point about the brand thing and the crf is what he said he wanted but now that you've all helped me to decide he's gonna struggle like fuck and man up on an MXer we can look at the other brands. And my advice to him will be to first decide what type of bike (mx or trail) then to look for the best condition/ best deal regardless of brand (as long as its a jappa)

what's the price and particulars of yours Boom?

Can't wait to get him swearing and cursing and covered in shit

i liked the X in the tight stuff, especially on the boggy stuff.
its pretty easy to ride, and it seems to save itself with ease when pushed

the modded R i rode was pretty cool too, just more full on, less forgiving, but it was on stock tires in mud

The differences are pretty much covered already.

Mines for sale too its an 04 crf250x its a very similar build to Boooms but still has the headlight. It has just been been rebuilt new piston, rings, gaskets and cam chain etc, new rear tyre, It goes well for what it is. Even a learner will feel like pro on it, these bikes are easy to ride.

Hey Kezza, I was looking at these about 3 years ago. You'd need to check my 'facts,' but peak horsepower was a lot more on the R. Was real surprised to find it was as much as 9-10 Hp (From memory of honda website specs). I'd say it's probably fair to assume the R might need more frequent rebuilds than it's trail tuned bro. Can't remember how much more bottom end/mid the X was supposed to have.

FWIW I compared power characteristics with XR400 as well. Almost same peak power as 250R but the XR put out near double the power of the 250 in the lower/mid of rev range (for a fraction of the maintenance bill too, lol). From memory the X weight was something like 12 or 14 kgs more than R?

Best your mate rides both if poss & and get what suits him. A lot might depend on his ability. Personally I quite liked the sound of Booom's crossbreed one.

out of it that this has come up again as my original post was 4 months ago! but wow it's a good thresd... heaps of helpful information and no bullshit... must've been a different kezzafish.

To the point now... Hadley still hasn't bought a new bike and his XR is under my house as it has really shit itself... I'll post pics here tomorrow 'cos it's funny. Main shaft bearing has totally disintegrated and the clutch basket has been bouncing around willy nilly breaking all the shock absorbing springs and scattering them around the gearbox...

I really need to convince him it's not worth fixing and re-rev him up about buying something descent.

But the daft fool is gonna spend all his money to get married instead... I'm gonna bake him this as a wedding cake... http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoser...99493_full.jpg

i cant rember the number of time i have spend wating for my mates to try and start thear r, they just dont like starting when hot

the majority of the power loss can be fixed by changing the exaust and jetting to match that of an R anyway.

someone with too much spare time could go thru the off road section and quote all the times the road guys come in and say something wrong / pointless / irrellevant to the topic. i reckon it would be a long thread though
