well, you're correct that the r is the race version and the X has a light, but thats just the tip of the iceberg as far as differences go.

most if not all the differences have allready been mentioned, but ill summarise off the top of my head

side stand - different main section of frame to accommodate this
different cases- X cases are thicker, also has starter hanging out of it
clutch cable - cable runs a different route in some year models to avoid the starter
