From the owners manual...Maximum continuous engine speed -
R80....7,200rpm - max hp 6,500rpm.
R65....7,300rpm - max hp 7,250rpm.
Like the old aircooled VW beatle, they are made to run at their top speed all day.I've had the R65 up to 8,000rpm....I've got a tendency to go WTF,and just hold it wide open when I'm in a good slide on gravel.....

Some of the reasons Beetles could run at top speed all day was top gear was an overdrive and the inlet manifold prohibited over revving.
I don't recall being able to do much over 4000 rpm in top.
Any higher than this tru the gears would hammer out the magnesium crankcase on # 2 journal.
I read an article on BMW's R90s racer and at those sort of revs they discovered no only did the oil pump use lots of power the pump started cavitating and foaming the oil....but then thats on a race bike.
As for old mans bikes....that role is taken by Falcadores and those hideous Chrysler 300's
Granted I havn't seen many young guys on BMW, but I wouldn't say their for old men.
No bike is made just for old men lol
From what I hear they have pretty good engines and make great tourers

Find a chick who’s just been dumped and comfort her by massaging her shoulders, and soon, she’ll be massaging your prostate.
10 days ago I thought I didn't have enough grey hair for a BMW.
Then I rode one.
Now I own it.
Thanks for listening, I'll just go back to my rocking chair on the porch.

Has it ever bothered you that Therapist is The Rapist if you break the word in two? It bothers me, especially when they suggest hypnosis.
