To see a life newly created. To watch it grow and prosper. Isn't that the greatest gift a human being can be given?
Close. I did 4 years doing an apprenticeship, and another 4 at Uni and I can tell you first hand they're about the same in terms of the amount learned. In the workshop I learned in my hands... something you can't do from a book.Originally Posted by avgas
For those of you that know it - that feeling of the thread being "just tight enough" when you're cranking up a bolt? Teach that from a book! Just one of many examples but a valid one I think.
But likewise there are some things best learned from books. Of course apply them to the worlds of racing, fixing or riding bikes and the experience part does tend to some ito play on most occasions.
I think people should never be scared to learn. Don;t throw your opinion out there as black and white truth - if someone comes back on something you said, you have the chance to either learn from it, or help them learn from you. If they don't want to - that's ok. Their choice and their loss.
As for the lurkers... welcome. I'm glad we're not all loudmouths

Hi I've been riding for 36 years and every comment I've ever made here has been entirely my own opinion - so no need to lurk - you can take my comments and like them or you can ignore them - I don't care - have always just tried to be helpful to fellow bikers and I have never take any offence from anyone else's comments as they are entitled to their opinions.

They spoilt Mini's when the brought out the Clubman. Far too much room around that engine bay for apprentices.Originally Posted by Motu

I replaced a radiator hose on one once - what an absolute c*nt of a job that was! Took freaking hours, most of which (from memory) was putting the new one on and doing up the clips...![]()

Frosty, don't forget that these very experienced types may also be very busy individuals with more pressing things to do than lounge about on a site helping some guy through the same problem he's helped 100 other guys through. Many of the queries on here are fairly general in nature and I've yet to see a query go unanswered for long.
option 2 is something I tried once upon a time on my pet subject/job of acoustics. Went down like a lead balloon despite it being worded nicely so when people want to bleat now about dBA's and their exhausts I might keep an eye on it but won't try to right the worlds wrongs as they're posted. Some people respond well to correction, others don't and it makes giving such assistance a little thankless.Originally Posted by Wolf
