Hey. Can anyone tell me what those (relatively) new illuminated bicycle signs are for on the Hutt Road offramp at Petone? I've seen them lit-up with no cyclists in sight, and heaps of cyclists around with no lit up signs. Is this meant to serve as a warning only, or does it give them right of way across the off-ramp? As far as I know, if they're off to the side of the main flow of traffic (i.e. in the emergency lane) then they're not part of the traffic flow and so should give way to turning vehicles (as you would if you were a pedestrian).
I've had more than one close call with cyclists cutting across the off-ramp with either no indication at all, or perhaps a quick wave of the right arm about 0.4 seconds before flying across the off-ramp at full speed. Dear bicyclists, please give more warning than this since I'm likely traveling at around 80k at this point, with any number of potentially dozy cagers behind me not expecting me to suddenly brake for you. My kids thank you.
I must admit, these cyclists have bigger balls than I do, because I'd never be able to just ride across that off-ramp at speed with only the briefest of glances over my shoulder. Aah well...
