Actually, technically, he didn't quite, he just knocked bits off the side and proved that an atom is mostly empty space. But his work led to the discovery of fission (splitting the nucleus of the atom).

Very, very interesting fellah. Look out for a 3-part doco to be screened sometime (went to the launch/preview last year), it'll be worth the watch.
