AANNYYway, as Jeff was saying...
Zerax hooked me up with a new set of bearings and seals first thing this morning, so I punched the last one out of the cush drive and refitted them all, complete with new seals. Awesome. Decided to risk it and not take the "just in case" trailer.
Finally got on the road with 8yo and 2yo sons in the back, our Au Pair in the front. She was critical to the recovery plan as she would drive the surf back through Rainbow and I'd ride. 12pm we were at the Rainbow / SH63 intersection. By 3pm I had the rear wheel back on the bike and decided we'd head back through Hanmer instead. Yep, the surf got a flat front tyre at one of the stream crossings - fuck knows how... All I know is I pulled over, the kids nuded up and had a splash around and stood in some cow shit, next thing I know I'm changing tyres. After a pucker moment of trying to find the wheel brace...all was said and done in about 15 mins. So with no spare left, time getting away on us and knowing the return would be slower with Amelie driving I opted for the tourist route back into town, through Waiau and up the coast.
2yo was asleep so chucked big brother on the back for 15-20km through the lower end back to Jacks pass where by then the growl from my decrepit exhaust had woken little brother. Tagged him in and he held on to the gas tank and cross brace on the handlebar back into town.
Turning onto the road to Waiau the front felt sluggish and wobbly...tyre pressure had about halved. Gunned it through Rotherham to Waiau where I almost overshot the corner leading onto the bridge...no air left...the last bit always goes quicker than the first...
Pulled into a mates place there where I swapped out the tube with the aid of his compressor (meaty arsed gash in it, cut my tyre too damn it). By 5.30 we were on the road and roaring towards Kaikoura for subway.
After than it was up the coast with a setting sun and trying to pacify two kids who'd had a guts full of dad's monday adventure. Riding alongside the car on long straights can work wonders.
That's my fill of the Rainblow this year me thinks. Just f*cken glad I didn't have the same thing happen on the DB1K. Recovery ops suck! Peace.
There are two kinds of adventurers: those who go truly hoping to find adventure and those who go secretly hoping they won't. We should come home from our adventures having faced their perils and uncertainties, endured their discomfort and beaten the odds, with a sly acknowledgment and revitalised solidarity of character.
Shit mate you,ve had drama for africa...glad you got home safe....
It was really cool to see two RD03 650's together at the dusty butt
The one with white crash bars belongs to whatastoner ,its really mint with only about 40,000 k's on the clock ,he's just fitted the marathon tank and an Ohlins shock.
Sorry we didnt get to ride with you , on that type of ride if you leave half an hour different from another group of bikes you never see each other all day, some other time mabe.
