You have Soichiro Honda to thank for that again...

Development of the clutch mechanism started at the same time as engine development, Harada recalls:

"From the start, the Old Man was saying, 'I want to make it so the noodle shop delivery boy can balance his tray on one hand and operate the bike with the other.' In other words, a bike that would enable the rider to leave one hand free. That means the clutch wouldn't be operated by hand."
Before that, were scooters auto-clutch? I'm not sure, but I don't think so... I'm pretty sure they didn't use variators etc. and the Vespas etc. had a proper clutch and gearchange. So it looks like the use of a scooter you describe was in fact sanctioned and designed for with the Super Cub

DKW aka Manhurin Hobby scooter had variator auto transmission in the mid 50s. Gutless as , mind you, but it worked OK

And big wheels too! Are those 17"? Can't see the rear wheel though. Maybe Soichiro pinched more ideas than we give him credit for

Is that a rear brake lever on the left handlebar though? Can't carry a beer crate like that. And it's a DKW, so it'll be 2-stroke and chew through fuel and oil, which cuts into beer money. So the Super Cub remains the true student-lifestyle-enabler.

Shit, she did draw them too! I thought they'd come from somewhere else.

Nice. This is why we keep girls around, I suppose.

    Definitely submit to Craccum.

bah. Humbug. It may have escaped your notice , but the Hobby has a big flat platform in front of the seat. Exactly the right size to take a HUGE stack of beer crates. Far more than could be hung from a handle bar. Students nowadays have no capacity for beer. And being a DKW , you can run it on kerosene if you're skint.

Been a long time since i read ye olde Craccum (so it sounds like its still around!), but this would be far preferable to some of the crap that was in there in the earlier half of the 1st decade of the 21st century.

HA!!! this shit is crackup...dunno whether this or the Hyo 250GP thread has given me more laughs in recent times!
Do you smell that? Two Stroke, son.Nothing else in the world smells like that.I love the smell of Two Stroke in the morning.
