Okay. Here's how it is. I'm going assume that you're ready to actually make the jump to a larger displacement bike and that you're going to get help from a mentor so as not to end up as roadkill second time around.

GSXR600 - a good bike, I have one for the track (and a thou for the road), and I've owned a 750 as well. The 600 is an excellent bike, better in most everyway than an R6 - but the R6 has really nice build quality. The GSXR is a good all rounder, and it has more oomph down low where you actually ride all day.

The R6 is like a screaming chick - fun the first time, but you get sick of lots of noise with very little faster faster...

The 750 is the best of the lot - but I reckon it's too big a jump for you. The 600 is way plenty for the second step.

Boomer is full of piss and vinegar, the 1000 is actually the best street bike of the lot - but it's like a bitch mistress, it will eventually dump your sorry ass on the ground if you don't get it right everytime. It's also about 10 times more expensive to run and keep in horseshoes. Anyone who tells you it's not expensive is riding like a girl, and should be on a 600 anyhow. The 1000 is way more bike than you can imagine with your 250 as a frame of reference. If you buy one, get a will and a life insurance policy - you'll have use for both.

Buy the GSXR600 - get the newest one you can afford with the lowest miles. Seek out a mentor. Get track time.
It’s diametrically opposed to the sanitised existence of the Lemmings around me in the Dilbert Cartoon hell I live in; it’s life at full volume, perfect colour with high resolution and 10,000 watts of amplification.

    What??!! :s

my thousand drank less than my 600. I used to ring the neck of the 600 to make it go, the 1000 ran along nicely on the torque.

As for tyres, i can rip a tyre up in under 2000k's on a 6 or a thousand.. im not fussy. But once you learn to be less ham fisted u realise you can get more life outta ya rubber than the squids do.... ( yes.. thats u ! telling me i ride like a girl.. ahahahahahahha )

A thousand can kill u but so can a 600... if your on a bike then respect is all thats needed.

buy a thousand mate.. dont listen to these dicks.

Agreed. Problem solved... you don't have to decide anymore
What you have in your heart will be revealed through what you have in your life.

If things are going badly in our circumstances, the answer to what is happening to us outwardly is more often than not found in the mirror.

Getting wreckless with the truth there madbikeboy.
Owned two gsxr1000's now, the second is close to 70 thousand Kays.......you can easily conserve tyres with an application of skill and forethought. Neither of my bikes have thrown me, I have had no use for insurance or a will, and anyone who thinks a 600 is slow or somehow safer than a 1000 is dillusional.
The real advantage and inherent safety with a 1000 is using less revs and more torque.

Yeah, I've seen this movie a few times. A 600 is still plenty fast, but a thou has more. I've seen a few thrown on their sides by young guys now.

Okay, you got me there, skill and forethought. I ride thanks to Pops Yoshimura, it's like having Satan on both shoulders... Hence the tire life measure by a wristwatch instead of a calendar...

A well ridden 600 will easily keep up with a Squid on a thou on the street.

I have both a pint and a litre. The litre uses more of everything, ridden the same way. 1000cc's of swept combustion area versus 600cc's. Umm, let me think... Tires, more torque equals less life.
