Any independant study has proved speeding per se is not the major cause of crashes (generally round 8%). Its scary they believe their own propaganda!. It would be great as you say to show them the crash rate will remain largely unaltered. However if its able to be overridden and not retrofitted it just will never happen. And as for losing all that revenue? It really would be a case of putting your money where your mouth is!

Dont be fooled. The manual overide is a means of pacification so as to get the idea off the ground and "accepted" by the "willing" public. Once it becomes accepted the manual overide will be removed. Remember the promises when speed cameras were first introduced to NZ...fixed and visible and only a small percentage of the top offenders ticketed...yeah right.

Nope, they will never get rid of the manual overide. But they will probably fit a transmitter that alerts the authorities of the use of the overide. You will have to fill out forms in triplicate explaining why you used the overide - if they don't accept your excuse then they will give you a ticket. They need to take your money off you somehow!

Isn't that a better thing? It's a hell of a more accurate description and it might focus their efforts a bit better.

I heard a few adverts recently on the radio implying that going faster than the speed advisory signs for corners is also considered speeding. Can only hope the speed limiters aren't programmed those speeds too!

No it won't -- which hopefully will (like Marmoot said earlier) cause the government to shift its focus from `all speeding is bad' to `use your brain and drive to the current conditions.'

....living 10 years in America, it was a shock to see cops held in some reasonable regard and consequently acting like human beings.

in the State of Ohio where i grew up.. we have these beautifully maintained long rolling expressways.. 5 lanes wide on either direction.. speed limits are 75 mph out of built up areas. .. you would regularly see long (5-10 car) "trains" .. all doing 90-100 mph...

The Troopers attitude for the most part there is " as long as its done 'reasonably' its all good ...1 car doing 100.. darting in and out of traffic WILL be pulled over and ticketed.. 10 cars doing the same thing in the fast lane with safe spacing usually wont get a look.

That's fucken dangerous. For instance if you're pulling out to do a shady passing manouvre, a car comes sailing around a corner towards you, and just as you stomp on the gas to get in front of the car you're passing your bloddy speed cutter kicks in.

I found the opposite on Wednesday night, $120 fine for doing 117kph on the motorway, in a late model car, going with the flow of traffic (cop got me with laser).

I try to respect the police, I really do, but when they give out tickets for bullshit like this, and don't even investigate most stolen cars or burgleries it very quickly removes any of this respect I may have had.
