El cheapo late 80s - early 90s bikes?

Gday team, anyone have decent advice about the above?

    Some models I know of(ish)

Say, early gixxers - which model is best again? the slingshot?
zxr750 - got reasonable idea on those. hard to find in decent cond at that budget however
    fzr 600/750
    bandit 600/1200
    gix1100
CB,GB and other 'classic' style bikes? - don't need to be in such era for these.

must be missing a few period pieces somewhere

Looking at both adv and road bikes at the moment, but it's the roadbike part im stuck on. Budget of 2.5k max means im a beggar trying to choose..

Don't wanna piss around with 250s but don't wanna go too big in cc either. I'll just end up throwing away the savings at new tyres etc.

get a 400; light, won't eat tyres and might be as low as 3k if you look hard enough.

best in the class is undoubtedly the vfr400 NC30 ('89-'94 model) for ridability and reliability.

only downside is that they're physically a bit small

but getting something good for 2.5k is pushing things even in the 150 market

Cheer TLD, not much to go wrong with those ol trusties. And most come with sexy paint jobs too Right up my alley. Keeping a sly eye on that TL too. Quite like em.

Oh, whats the diff between a tenere and standard? Are they more long range adv orientated? My def of adv is just goin wherever whenever. not tour adv. Small range isnt much of an issue yet

motorby - yeah, considering 400s too. Be nice to turn one into a trackbike once I start earning full time wage again.

May bump the budget depending on the bike, but trying to keep it low.

That 83 Tenere has the 32 litre fuel tank and a bit less power.
The blue one (like mine) had a 23 litre fuel tank due to Yamaha putting the airbox under the tank and it gained a bit of power over the earlier model.
The other Tenere there is the first of the "softer" models, good for touring with the fairing, but more plastic to break off road, but still a capable bike even though that one seems to be missing some parts of the lower fairing.
    Nevermind the Bollocks

You won't find a descent one for anything under $3.5k though....

Would definitely be worth your while saving a little longer...you can buy mine at the end of the year

We have a early GSXR750 (1985) that we traded last week. It will be put thru our workshop and given a decent service then we will put it on the floor registered and wof for $2500. Its done about 60000km, runs fine, new tyres, good chain and sprockets etc.

Don't overlook the 80's Kawasaki air cooled IL4 750 (actually 738cc) GPZ or GT 750.

I have a 1987 GT750 P5 in the garage and it is a great bike to ride. Unburstable motor and does everything you ask of it very well. A typical UJM.
Keep the shiny side upright, Rhino.

I know of a VF500 late model which might going for under 2k. It's been rebuilt from a 400 frame (same as 500) with 400 front end. I used it for about a year and it ran really well. The present owner hasn't time to use it which is a shame.
These were very quick in their day -135mph and very agile.

That's more like it. Model names of the somewhat forgotten boiks. Thanks peeps. Pros and cons of each that you can think of?

It's not that I dont have the $, its more I dont want to spend that much. Don't feel comfortable having money tied up in different toys while on student budget.

and oh yeah, last time I rode a VFR it wanted to burn my backside off constantly

Just the heat off the exhaust and the engine. Ended up moving around like I had ants in my pants. Lot worse than an R1 with underseat exhausts
