The gang name was originally "crypts". But this got mangled into "crips"
Much like God's own (country) got mangled into Godzone....
And Tua's O for (cyclone) Ofa got mangled into O for Awesome

Heres a little small amount of info (i didnt get this from wiki or any other source, to my knowledge) on the gangs to possibly enlighten or inform you and/or other kbers.
All in South Auckland
kbz- an accronym for "killahbeez" they wear mostly yellow, youths trained in kick boxing.
DMS- Drugs , Money, Sex
2ceez- Crips gang, in huge numbers, all blue wearing caps or t shirts with the logo 2ceez
JDK- Bloods gang rival to crips, wearing all red
BTdubs- Wear shirts with the logo "btw", no specific colour, affiliated with the "killabeez".
187- if you hear or see this tagged it means homicide, as in America the code number for homicide is 187.
If you see chucks thrown over a power poll/line it means you are in gang turf, or a member has died in that street.
Do they think they are yanks? Ok, silly question, of course they do.
Did you know some gang members from America have moved over to New Zealand hence the American gang numbers and codes.
That is why the question still remains -Are born and bred NZ gangs really trying to imitate American gangs or started by USA criminals to gain income in drug trades and import/export illegal goods using predominantly Maori and Polynesians as 'bum boys".
