I agree but http://www.globalpovertyproject.com/ is trying to change that.....
In fact, their (third world countries) death rate is only about 50% higher than that of developed countries whereas their population growth is about 3 times as high, I guess you are basing your assumptions on the hype that the media makes of it.
Do you know what the meaning of famine is by the way? a lack of food is exactly the reason.
Is your first paragraph a direct quote from a World Vision ad?
There have always been Good NZers trying to make a difference. I doubt they are responsible for halving extreme poverty.
I know you'd like to believe the pretty words in those website, but those poor buggers probably think normal rainfall tastes like urine. They need to learn to piss downwind.
The only way to fix the world's poverty is to stop giving people stuff and stop making it worthwhile for underperforming economies to exploit their human resource to provide consumer products at stupidly low prices to stupid, fat "Westerners". That's a positive action any of us can take today.
I buy Italian shoes because I've abandoned vanity and $200-$400 will give me a pair of shoes that will survive a decade and a couple of new soles.
If a man is alone in the woods and there isn't a woke Hollywood around to call him racist, is he still white?
The survial rate depends entirely on which part of the world you're talking about. I made some assumptions about your predispositions to ethnic prejudice and thought "Horn of Africa". You can't control birthrate in countries that don't educate the entirel populace so you are left with one option, and Genocide, isn't like, cool, mmmkay?
The world has never been short of food. Merely the will to give it away for nothing, and the desire of the recipients to distribute it.
The cause of most of the major famines have been logistical. When a rebel army refuses to let your aid through to a refugee camp full of people displaced by political action beyond their control, they aren't dyinbg of starvation. They are dying of direct military action.
The "First World", :Third World" descriptors were dropped from common usage quite some time ago. There are elements of the reactionary press attempting to normalise the phrases again though.

I wasn't saying they were? there are a lot of different organisations. The point I was making is that in some small way we can all make a difference, that it's not as hopeless or as much a waste of time helping as most people on here are saying.
Actually I spent a number of years traveling thru different parts of the world - I've seen extreme poverty, I've seen the crippled, the hungry and the dead, the exploited, I've seen home and lives destroyed by war, and I've seen the difference good people are making, first hand
100% on to it
That's what the Global Poverty Project is all about
That's what I'm inviting people to find out about
That's the intelligent sustainable answer
Lifes Just one big ride - buckle up or hang on
Gotta tell you a story:
I have a brother who found a job in some far-flung shithole (Dubai, I think), well paid, etc. He lived in comfort while all around him were in need. One local begger had a huge growth on his side and a few of the 'imports' got to talking about him. "Let's put some cash together to fix this guy's growth and he'll be saved" etc etc. They put it to the begger and he refused (canny dude, this one) as it would remove his livelihood.
It's not just a NZ way of thinking is it?
Heaps of nations have millions to spend on guns etc to shoot each other to bits yet haven't got two grains of rice to rub together at tea time.
Go figure.......
