That's the plan.... I have more confidence with that road than I used to, just the speed doesn't reflect it.... But you right... (dare I say it!! ) the more times I ride over there the better I will get!

Wonder if my trusty 'leading' partner will be there?

Unless the plans change, I'm in, got to make the most of a NW day in winter.

Always keen for a spin to Akaroa, maybe even F&C for lunch.
Riding cheap crappy old bikes badly since 1987

Long as ride is enjoyable and tyres stay on the deck , any speed is good.

Quite likely I'll make it along this week, although I may just as easily go an hour earlier (on me own?) as a 12 noon depart feels like I'm wasting too much morning waiting.
I see shingle pulling me away from the main path at some stage... maybe on the way back... some extra Bays, Bossu Rd or at least the Western Valley rd... one/other or all the above.

I always enjoy riding... and I totally agree... if the tyres are where they are meant to be... then its a fucking great day!

I've been hooked again on off roaders, well, dual purpose anyhoo. I'm trying to make my mind up between two models, an '86 XL600R with 50,000 odd and a '91 XR600 with 30,000 odd on it but 3000k ago had a complete engine rebuild, top and bottom.

What I'd love to find out is if there are any major differences between the two models? I know the XR is supposed to be sportier and the XL more of a work horse but what about weight, reliability, parts etc?

The XR attracts me because of the rebuild, I've always wanted one and it's in the south island.
The XL attracts me because I may be able to get it a bit cheaper but it's in the north island so kinda negates that. It also has passenger pegs plus the fitting for a top box which would be good. I'd like to put Gem on the back and to have somewhere to put our crap so she doesn't have to wear a backpack.

The XR is obviously in better nick, rebuild etc plus there's some surface rust on the XL. The XR may need new tyres for a WOF, too knobly possibly, which bumps the price up.
The XL's Ks are getting up there. Is there any maintenance or problems that may arise from an old thumper with 50,000k's on the clock?

    Here's the XR:

    Here's the XL:
    http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/List...x?id=298549566

Is it my imagination or does the XL look like it has a bigger tank? That's a plus if it does ...
I know footpegs and topbox are do-able to either models so really I'd love to know:

    Weight difference
    Comfort difference
    Reliability difference
    Running costs Difference

As most of you know, I'm not a racer. That doesn't mean I wouldn't love the XR to bits but if there's a large comfort difference then it may be enough to sway the vote.

Helen's DR felt just about right for me, not too heavy, not too big, plenty of beans with smooth delivery.

    Thanks for any help!

    Pete

What do you want to predominately use the bike for Peeteey ?

Carry passengers ? 4x4 level and up off road ?

Hot , Sam , discovered the XR's are designed for a 81 kg rider , if heavier really need to start looking at uprated springs for top shelf performance - , max load standard including clothing 100 KG (might be naked next time ya's see me cruising )

Hot judging by recent photos your DR looks to be dragging its ass end (unlike the rider) here's a good article for dialling in your suspension.
(Don't worry if on tippie toes when raised - easier off road to back up bike etc)

Xr needs to be dialled in for riders weight for easy going off road riding (super-sensitive) - or its the proverbial Pig !

Thanks BRP, am hopefully getting the bike tomorrow. Will ride it for a bit and try to fine tune the suspension ready for some warmer season

The idea of this bike, have bought the DR, is to use it predominantly off road. I'll still have the BMW for the road stuff and no, it'll not be 2 up. Just me bouncing around and falling off with a grin on my face

I also went for the lighter bike on purpose mainly because I like being able to throw it around and also because I get some RSI in the forearms sometimes and don't want to set it off struggling with a heavier bike.

The image of you cruising in the buff has put a rather disturbing image in my head but when combined with the image of Cruza licking Sam's XR's seat last weekend ...

Thanks for all the info, great to have so many knowledgeable people around!
Would you be up for a (gentle) ride maybe this Sunday arvo if the weathers not to crap?

My rear seems to be up for scrutiny atm!
...and you can help out with a "dragging ass end" brp?? no liposuction needed??
