My idea was similar but put them on an island & film with massive $$$ pay-per-veiw subscriptions and there aint no rules on the island 'cept you gotta stay there!.
They want to go round killing/beating people will now they can legally 'till death (which probably wouldn't be far away).

    You mean like this?;
Cats land on their feet. Toast lands jamside down.
A cat glued to some jam toast will hover in quantum indecision

Curiosity was framed; ignorance killed the cat

Fix a computer and it'll break tomorrow.
Teach its owner to fix it and it'll break in some way you've never seen before.

heh, would it be enough to prevent people from wanting to go to prison camp... hmmmm... no locked doors to protect you... murderers roaming free along with those who partake in Rimutaka rules... I love the idea, it'd encourage me to stay on the right side of the law...

Bring in 'tent city' make prison life shit, make people NEVER want to return!

A couple of pics from the already established 'tent city'
If that's the prison in California run by apparently the toughest Sheriff in the States, then they have the highest repeat offender rate of US prisons at present .. so much for your deterrent!

I don't know whether I sincerely hope some of you go to prison - so you'll know what it's like inside ... or whether I sincerely hope most of you never experience the inside of a prison ...

It's not anything like you think ...

    Well fuck me.
The Prison system is a joke in NZ. And its even a bigger joke than I expected.
No wonder we have a problem with reoffenders.
Now I really think we should start killing them off. But we need to ease the idea into it.

    I've got it, a lottery.
Every month 1 prisoner is randomly chosen and killed off. So they have have their good lives in prison, but the "lotto" will be like a dark cloud hanging over them.
    Who's next? Who knows....

Nope the one in Arizona with the lowest re-offender rate & "America's Toughest Sheriff: Joe Arpaio"
"recidivism rate of about 16% at Tent City vs. the national average of 85%"

You mean the guy who's under investigation by the DOJ, FBI, and a federal grand jury for numerous civil rights violations, and misuse of power?.. The guy who has misspent up to $80million in taxpayer money on crap including investigating political rivals, a trip to Alaskan fishing resorts for his deputies, and trips to Disneyland?

He also ran a police department where about 75% of cases declared cleared without being resolved were done so without proper investigation, with a 15% arrest rate, including 3 rapes of underage girls for the reasons that "a suspect declined to come in for questioning", "a mother did not want to pursue the investigation", and in one case before DNA had even been processed.

And as far as his actual prisons, according to a 98 study that he commissioned, there was no significant difference in recidivism of prisoners between when he was in charge and when his predecessor was.
The guy has also been ordered by the 9th circuit court of appeals to fix the conditions in his jail, as inmates (including those who are pre-trial and haven't even been convicted of anything) have been fed moldy, rotten, and contaminated food, denied treatment for serious health conditions, and generally not accorded even basic human rights.
He's also cost his state at least $43 million in wrongful death and injury claims from those poor conditions.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be happy enough for prison conditions to be made a bit more basic, but emulating a scumbag like Joe Arpaio, and denying inmates basic human rights isn't the answer to reducing crime.

If you want to get a little more of an idea about how much of a crooked asshole this guy is, there's further reading here and here.

NZ believes in rehabilitation of offenders. You rehabilitate by educating them.

The idea is that educating them makes them more mature (as they 'discover' that other people feel pain etc) and mature people don't kill. This is derived from a theory that says that murder is basically an adult's tantrum or revenge and that when they mature emotionally this "kill-kill-kill" reaction disappears.

The problem is that the pissed-off public wants retribution but someone who's being punished severely isn't going to be receptive to education.

Would you prefer criminals leaving jail punished or less likely to re-offend?

    * Also, I think William Weld (a former governor of Massachusetts) was the one who was all about punishment-only prisons. Recidivism rates were so high that his successor had to reverse those policies.

** I read most of this is some sort of journal once, I'm no expert in this area

Fair enough, sorry for the rant, I've read of the guy before, and he really is a corrupt weasel who seems to have pretty much the opposite opinion of most justice systems, and believe it better that 99 innocent men are jailed or executed than one guilty man go free, and that those who break any law, no matter how minor, should no longer be afforded basic human rights.

I tend to agree, and I've also read several articles that link longer sentences and harsher treatment of prisoners with increased recidivism rates, but ultimately it seems the vast majority are more concerned with seeing criminals suffer than seeing them rehabilitated, with the added complication that a fairly large percentage of criminals will re-offend no matter what.
