    After my first motorbike

Hi. Ive recently decided to sell my car for A motorbike as I always wanted a motorbike and just get no real enjoyment from driving my car and The amount of fuels it goes through and cost of parking its just to much. So I plan to do a ridig course and basic handling course in 2 weeks and get my learners and then sell my car and get kitted up.

The main issue I have is I will be limited on cash and was looking at something similar to a GN 250. But ten I will also need helmet jacket gloves and possible pants and boots. From what My step dad has told me it is very easy to spend my entire budget on just safety gear. So I need some help in both sourcing a bike that is 250cc or under but preferably nothing under 125cc and also places where I can find good gear as cheap as possible or some decent second hand gear.

And advice is greatly appreciated. Also. Im not brand new to motorbike as my step father and mother are both riders as well as there neighbor. So I do have a basic source of info on what I need just not where to get it from. I will have approximately $1500 availible to me and would like to have a bike and gear to ride it by easter.

    thanks

    Hmm - that's a pretty small budget.

Go and see Motomail - they should be able to kit you out in gear.

As for a bike, you'll be struggling with your budget to get a learner bike - the 250cc market is crazy.

Your step Dad is wise. www.1tonne.co.nz have a range of gear

If the $700 is just for the bike then expect it to need some repairs and be handy with a spanner.

Most 250s will get around the 25 - 30km/litre. Although this sounds attractive (saving fuel) by the time you pay for insurance, rego, gear, servicing bikes often don't end up any cheaper unless you rack up a lot of kms.

I just gave away a free leather jacket at the weekend. http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...post1130009570

I think you will find that Motomail and perhaps Cycletreads do leaner combos.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately im a student so that rules out any sort of hire purchase which my step dad tried to recommend so the only cash i will have is the cash from selling my car which will be about 1500 hopefully. I would love to get that bike but it has no rego. If I can find a better source of money then I will definitely consider that bike unless I could pay him in installments. If I could pay in installments then I would grab that bike as soon as I had sold my car.

Possible. But that has been in a crash and the guy says its $40 worth of parts to get a warrant but hasnt done so which makes me think there is other stuff wrong with it. Also I would have to get that shipped from Christchurch which would be a very expensive ordeal due to the distance and the recent earthquake. But I will keep my eye on it.

OK. So I am currently looking at trying to get as much gear using my credit card as possible so the full amount from my car sale can be used on a bike.

Cool,I don't think you would have gotten a decent bike for $700. $1500 there are a lot more choices.

Yea gonna try for that 06 one even if I have to get the bike and then sort gear. Just means I wont ride it for a bit.

My other question now is insurance. What insurance provides will cover motorbikes. Tried AA but couldnt find anything as I want a quote to see what Im getting into.

With a bike that cheap you'll be wanting 3rd party at most...

I think you'll be surprised at how expensive bikes are to run.

Do the sums, I know there are a few KBers out there that know the exact cents/km for their bikes.

Riding a bike isn't IMO an economic decision at all, definitely a fun one though!

I think you will struggle to find a bike that doesn't require some work to bring up to scratch for $700-1500.

    Good luck

Tag on to your parents insurance if they will let you, that's if your under 25, Mine for the 250 was something like $550 per year and it was insured fully for 5k and I had a $300 excess, trying to get the 400 on it but because I already have one bike under their name the insurance company is forcing me to apply under a new policy, I had a good quote from http://www.kiwibike.co.nz/ my full cover also covered my gear
