Develop a personality that ensures no-one wants to come and stay.
I have. But it is not working.
Re the initial Q: Yes, mates is simple. They are always welcome and nothing is expected or even wanted. But nice if something is done.
Kids are sorted too. They are after all coming home for a visit.
You know when you are in a cage and you pick up a hitchiker. They pay by keepin you company and awake. Smalltalk and at times some interesting discussions.
It is when you open your door for a stranger, a friend of a friend.
Exactly, I don't expect "payment" from Guests. If I have said you can stay, you can stay. But if on the other hand if I say it is time ta go it's time to go.
I have been put up by many people in my life. All of them have looked after me well. I have made sure that they know I have appreciated that.
I have paid that forward (and back) with people I have put up. Nothing asked of them, but respect and gratitude is always appreciated.
It's what ya do. "Acceptance of a gift honours the Giver" (From Stephen Donaldson's Unbeliever Series). Expecting payment for a "Gift" is not giving, it's selling.

Hmm an interesting addendum - I have always opened my home to friends and strangers - including friends of friends - I don't expect anything in return - never have - nice when people help with the dishes etc. But an open home is to me an open heart - not ever has this been abused - and I always try to pay it forward as it's a great big roundabout that works.
Life is a gift that we have all been given. Live life to the full and ensure that you have absolutely no
