Do report it stolen.
If you reclaim it without reporting it stolen...you could end up being the one accused of taking it from its new (temporary) address. Strange, but alas, true.

You have now discovered why the burglary clearance rate (last time I saw the figures) in Auckland is 6% - and I assume it is only that high because some crims are stupid, unlucky or discover religion and go and confess.
Also why politicians claims crime is dropping seems at odds with the reality as you know it, because people don't bother reporting it any more (been there, done that).
Report it anyway, as at least then it is on record.
Don't expect anything to happen and start shopping for a replacement.
If you don't get any action, push it up the hierarchy. Be interesting to see what excuse the Minister of Police would come up with if he bothered to reply to a letter...

I find it difficult to believe the cops keep asking you why you don't retrieve the bike yourself. You could ask for the officer's credentials then confirm that he is authorising you to enter the premises, 'speak' to the occupants and retrieve the stolen property.
Ask him when the police adopted the policy of encouraging the public to take the law into their own hands.
Then advise him that you have recorded the conversation, in the event that the episode end up in a courtroom.
Maybe if there is a new policy of the public reclaiming their own stolen goods then there might be a good sideline for security & repo firms....
Keep on chooglin'
It was comms i spoke to. No idea if comms are police or not.
First lady i spoke to said something about "your not keen to get it yourself?" i say no.
Second lady said "don't you have any family or friends to go and get it?" i say no again.
I have nothing against the police its just damn frustrating. They did make an effort. I was just at work at the time.
Bike was stolen Monday night. Reported Tuesday morning. They also went through my car (unlocked nothing stolen) that was mentioned but not reported.
Given up on the cops. Just hope i see it again. Work early tomorrow morning might take a wander down their house.
Got a phone call at work saying a cop will come around at 9:30. So i left work early to get home in time. Its now 10:00 and no sign of anyone. And now im missing class.
I may have to stab someone to get the police around here.
Cop finally came around. Showed him a photo and gave him a printed photo of bike. He walks off to where bike was seen comes back 20 minutes later with the bike.
Apparently the guy found it on his lawn. There are two houses at the property. Both thought it was the others bike. Guy said he rode it then locked it up in the shed. Cop said thats theft by finding and he could be arrested. Guy said he was going to put ad in the paper....cop said report it to the police......so in the end i got my bike back and its my birthday today so im happy.
/Thread.
Crime itself isn't going down but the reporting of it is.

Happy birthday! And you didn't have to stab anyone!

No brainer... "Just saw my neighbour with my stolen bicycle and some odd object, might've been a pistol, probably just an airgun or something". They'll come. Worked for (against) dick in the Nissan Silvia on Aynsley Terrace... just sayin....
