If the dogs name was Nigger then that is what it should be. Lets start taking the sting out of the word nigger by using it in more positive contexts and the name of a hero's dog is a good positive context to start with.

I inherited a cat called Nigger.Still have him.
All was ok till I took the varnint to the vet. She asked me the name of the cat in a crowded waiting room. I could not bring myself to say "Nigger" so I said Niggs instead.People still looked sideways at me though.

I probably would not ever call an animal 'Nigger". On the other hand, the dog in the movie should keep the name he was given for historical reasons.

I have no problem for the movie - that was the dog's name ... But I don't believe we can "take the sting out of the word" - it will always be a derogatory temr for Black people ...

Simple commercial reality is that it'd hurt the movie, and that's a real issue.

I find it quite offensive they've changed the name of the dog. If Nigger was his name, Nigger his name should be!.
I'm sure Stephen Fry would take offense to be known as Steph especially if shown in a movie

Using the word in relation to a person might be a problem. Using nigger in relation to a dog when that is what the dogs real names was, I don't see why we should make this a problem. I am amused by your use of the a spelling instead of er, is this meant to somehow sanitize the word?

I fully agree about the dog side of things. And I used that spelling, as I think you'll find it's how the Afro Americans would spell it, and it was in that context I was using it as an example.
