I'm in favour of the comma. I think that containing a phrase, if only for the sake of context, is superior to the convention, and I'm not afraid to use it.

And my convention says it's fine to begin with, for added emphasis only.

Conversely, and germane, is that it is a device used by Adams, D. Almost, in this case, ironically.

A lot of the good threads were started/continued by those in a niche of incompetence. Those incompetent enough to have entertaining exploits, but not so incompetent as to make a hash of it. With the abundance of illiterate newbies on the site, perhaps the division has grown too great?
