Now now, we've seen how ineffective these half hearted systems have been in the past.

    However, help is at hand!

So you would simply get them to continue doing what they are doing, but with an education?

After my 'education' they would only be doing the first part of what they had been doing - the drinking part...

When it gets to that point though do the people have a driving problem or a drinking problem? If the latter then no amount of driving penalties are going to change things.

Part of the problem is society does not ostracise those people enough

"More than two dinking driving convictions?"

"Sorry sir, then you can't have that job/loan/mortgage/hire-purchase agreement or enter pubs and you have to go to the back of the hospital list or ever have a drivers licence for the rest of your life etc."

And your mates now all hate you.

But even that won't work with some...

One of our local pissed-driving idiots got picked up only because he was speeding.

Mind you, he WAS doing 143kph.

6 months loss of licence. resit driving test and 24 months with a ZERO alchohol limit would be the first and easy step.

Maybe we're thinking with too narrow a view....repeat offending leads to roadside executions and organ harvesting maybe? Not sure if the alcohol lobby would approve of losing customers this way though...but would shorten the waiting lists for organ transplants.

The breath-test stations also pick up stolen cars, banned drivers and all sorts of other arseholes.

I say good on 'em. 50 drunk-drivers is still 50 too many. Also, as others have said, better this than camping out with a radar/laser pinging people for going 10km/h over the limit.

one reason people never learn is financial penalty doesn't work! at this stage people are so used to having money taken from them, whats a little more??? directly affect them then they may learn!
Hell a week in the cells would do more than the current "pay us monies & we'll let you go do it again" system we currently use. At-least then your taking something away from them, a week of their life they will never get back

I thought some papers did a name and shame list with the usual outcry?
Considering the odd lawyers are charging a min of 10 grand to try to get their clients off, I would think there is a stigma around (being a low life drunken fucktard with no self discipline or regard for any other living thing or property around their miserable stinking lives) driving convictions considering these little festering lawyers dens stay open for business.

A drink/drugs checkpoint is just a net across the road so the report in the papers should include all the other little fish they catch outside of just road policing. Especially when the bailiffs, maf, vehicle inspectors "both heavy and compliance" and immigration are all part of the fishing net.
