Because he was a bit of a Wellington icon. Everyone who works or spends any significant amount of time in the CBD will have seen, and recognised, him on a fairly regular basis. Whether you thought he was harmless or disgusting there's no denying that he was one very distinctive homeless guy.

If they wanted to put up a statue to a homeless guy what about the one that used to wander around with a swag and a yellow plastic bucket, at least he kept himself clean and tidy and was polite. Wonder if the Museum Hotel still have the paintings of him? But he was just as much an "icon" of the Wellington Homeless in his day. But why celebrate those the chose to drop out of society, isn't that a contradiction and therefore insult?

Some how I can't imagine Blanket Man having many friends amongst the "friends of Jesus" group although he would have supporters amongst christian social worker groups I guess.
