    Observations?
Do you work in mental health or do you have personal experience with many mental health patients...I'm just curious because in general people that haven't miss a lot.
I'm curious if you you have been exposed to, or really have a good idea of the mental health system.
Many people think because they have studies of n=1 (or n=2,3 or 4), that everything is a mess
Mental health covers such a wide range but I have family affected and friends, have lived next door to a house the started with able bodied and was then modified for full care (wheelchair, bed ridden etc) patients. Have friends that work with/in care houses. I have seen the before and after affects in the community. I have also worked with parents whose offspring were in a mental hospital and going through its closure.
I feel I have been far enough away to see the forest and not be blinded by the trees but not so far away that the forest looks like a green smudge.

    Fair enough

I think I would be fair in saying though, that those that you are exposed to are likely the minority and the extreme end

I am not saying mass closure of hospital level mental facilities was the right thing it do. I just don't think locking up severely affected mental patients is always the answer. It may be the easy way out but not always the best way

But like anything in life, things are never black and white

Looks like we kind of agree but coming from different angles. Maybe we agree more than we disagree.

Oh and no some of those I am exposed to are suffering different degrees of depression and are managing quite nicely but to be fair this thread is wrt a man that was much more extreme and tended to refuse help with his issues (whatever they were).

love the photo. At first glance it looks like the guy is pissing on the tributes which, given what Crasher has pointed out, could be seen as an appropriate tribute in its self.

I'm over that argument. He suffered a religious upbringing and possibly retarded genetic lineage. Whether family retardation is society fault or not is debatable. Mercury and heavy metal poisoning of the food chain being a classic case in point

?? but we have the Beehive here. OK, so they are mainly temporary Auckland exports but they still get attributed to Wellington.

I hope he said "And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attend the funeral"

On the news tonight they were interviewing your everyday Wellingtonian and one responded that not only was he an icon for Wellington, but an icon for the whole country. Yes Blanket Man, so called for the blankets he sent to the victims of the ChCh earthquakes. Also got his name from the blankets he donated to under-privileged families in NZ who couldn't afford proper heating. Blanket Man, an icon of New Zealand.

There'll be a movie next. With Tem Morrison as BM.

though it was one of "better posts ' can't even remember writing it, and don't understand that last sentence, ...
the basic idea still is there. blanket man was at the margin of our society and needed/used the care we provided
hells bells the mark of a society is how it treats the weakest and those on the margin.
JK,and all those snivelling self serving greedy arses in Wellington, and in their corporate offices, have caused more pain and suffering than blanket man ever did.and if this is what nz or indeed society has become
I don't want to be a part of it
and if this makes me a pathetic piece of excrement, then I am one of the proudest pieces you will ever meet
