ACC should be on a per person basis, you should list your hobbies, motorcycling/skydiving etc and should only be able to make claims for injuries caused doing your listed hobbies! This way you are paying for your personal ACC insurance! Items outside these might be covered but with a corresponding hike in your levies for the following year?
I have had three or four ACC claims and they were all skydiving related. I understand that it comes out of a different bucket to the on road costs, but in the end it is all the same bucket isn't it? In essence that treatment was free because, like rugby players, mountaineers and MX riders, I did not pay any levy.

Totally agree that if we are going to have personal medical insurance it should be linked to risk and past history. But that would be too hard.

Like that will work. People would simply lie on the form to pay less ACC levies.

And we used to have personal injury insurance before ACC. It was a complete failure, which is why this country had a Royal Commission of Inquiry, that produced the Woodhouse report, and ACC was bought in to replace it - and works much better.

By "bucket" if you means the collective pockets of the tax payers of NZ, then yes, ultimately we pay for it one way or another. All you can argue about is how to slice the pie up.

Yeah they could lie, but when a claim is made then ACC will know! Hike in levies for that person for the next year!
No system is perfect but it could be a little fairer, currently us Road Motorcyclists pay for the all the other idiots, cyclists, motorcrossers etc.
Just have to find a way to divvy it up correctly.....

How about we all pay the same amount. Perhaps adjusted for affordability. We all benefit from the others choices, directly or indirectly. Cages benefit from bikers due to less congestion. The country benefits from skydivers, bungee jumpers etc through tourists. Lets go back to the original idea of a no blame, shared risk system instead of this creep to an insurance.

Three people including a baby have been hospitalised with moderate injuries after a cyclist crashed into pedestrians in Wellington this morning.

Inspector Mike Coleman said emergency services were called to the scene on Adelaide Rd, Mt Cook, about 8.15am.

An ambulance communications spokeswoman said a cyclist, a man and a baby suffered moderate injuries in the crash.

You forget the number of those overseas tourists each year ... that injure themselves ... and are fully entitled to ACC cover while here in NZ. Few paying anything in the way of an ACC levy.

Well, with the not-so-cheap tourist attractions, accommodations and activities here, how else are we going to pull them tourists in?

Make them pay full cost of rehabilitation. After all that is what medical and travel inurance are for. Kiwis don't get free or cheap treatment when we go overseas. Thats why we get travel insurance

BuzzyBoi appears to not have liked the police knocking on his door and asking questions.
