Auckland car drivers, a lone breed?

A sunny day and stuck in the office all day today so I used the bike to get to Newmarket (work) from home in St Heliers. I took a longer route than necessary but hey, why not?
First near miss was from a Merc in a hurry to get in the T3 lane, even though she was alone and busy on the phone! Get over it I told myself.
Reached Remuera and a parked cabbie locked eyes with me and promptly pulled a U turn, obviously excited to get an early morning fare. So pleased I fixed the ABS on the bike.
Heading up Carlton Gore Rd, nearly there and Mr white van man threw open his door and looked very surprised as he took (so did I) evasive action to avoid my LH cylinder. Fof FFFFF sake.
I took the coast route home!

Aucklands drivers make the the rest of the country look amazing in comparison. Every time I go there I see shocking driving.

I had two reasonable near misses within 1km of home when I left this morning... Figured it was a warning to go back to bed, except I had work stuff to do.

So, you now believe us when we all say "They're trying to kill you" ?

Certain times and/or days along Great North Road and Karangahape Road are nuts.

I'm acclimatised and hardly notice much now a days, but sometimes the traffic from/to the many side streets merges with the main road flow or leaves for a side street, in such a chaotic manner....just viewing ahead is a sight of mayhem for extended periods of time
Its non stop like a writhing snake, very highly competitive arena. But yeah east orks has some real shockers for some reason.

Then K road after midnight Fridys is hellish even in a car.

Some days or times are dangerous and should be avoided by newbie riders. Everyone goes mad.

I have a day like that like.. twice a year.. the rest of the time its fine.

The secret is to learn how to read minds..

In saying that.. driving down Dominion rd (going south) - get about 3/4 down at about 2:30am, doing about 70k. See these headlights in the distance behind me.. look away.. look back "farque.. they got close quick" - thinking it might be Mr Policeman, I knocked a few more kmh off a few secs later I arrived at the shops at the cnr of mt Albert rd. Just as I got to the start of the shops this car comes blasting past, on the wrong side of the islands.. passes me and the car in front, decides to come back on to our side of the median islands, and does so... at least one of his tires explode as he comes across (maybe 2).

The car in front hits the picks, which I had anticipated and gone left already away from him. The now 3 wheeler goes through the red lights, and hangs a right down Mt Albert.. sparks flying, grinding, graunching.. As I got to the lights they went green (like.. 10 secs later) and he was gone.. no sign of him anywhere..

The funny thing was the dude as he pulled across the median barrier island things and everythign exploded.. he had the most surprised expression on his face (he had turned his head, in an attempt to make sure he was safe to pull back in I suspect).

I had just worked an 18 hour day and I was knackered.. nerves were jangling all the way home..

I like Auckland traffic, every dumb thing that can be done by your fellow road user will be done on a regular basis.

So you become a better and better rider as you avoid getting killed or damaged from a day to day.

You can spot the out of townners easy,,,stopping for orange lights,,what's up with that shit ?

    Auckland Rocks,,go the Blues.
