so in your eyes crashing at 170 equals your organs not in the right place, and loss of brains??

I think that is being a bit emotive, and buying into the whole speed kills thing.

I know for a fact that you can drop a bike at speeds in excess of that mention, and basically walk away from it having been there done that. No broken bones, a bit of soft tissue injury, and fairly bruised.

I do however agree that speeds like that are probably not a good idea on NZ's public road network in most areas.

As long as you don't hit a power-pole, tree, gate-post, armco barrier, other vehicle etc you might be able to walk away...maybe...

You can bin it at 170 klick on a racetrack and that's sweet. Lots of run-off, some sand or dirt, no "road furniture", go for a little slide on your tortoise shell.

If you stacked it at 170 plus on an open road and you apparently walked away from it, you lucked the fuck out. You didn't hit an Armco, you didn't hit a fencepost, or a tree, or a car, or go underneath an oncoming vehicle.

Human beings are very fragile, especially when they hit something hard at speed/get hit by something hard travelling at speed. I got to learn this back in January when I got to sit with a man on the side of the road as he died due to massive head and internal injuries. It's an unpleasant experience but very enlightening re: how bad you can get fucked up, 'cause he was not looking pretty.

Also, consider this. You are driving in your car, on the open road. You are struck head on, or in the side, by a 200kg metal two-wheeled object travelling at 170km/h. There's a good chance that the car occupant could end up dead or real fucked up too. A bike at that speed is a fucking missile.

Don't need to feel lucky, my current ride runs out of go before 160 on it's standard gearing.

Actually is more the implied message that speed is the be all and end all of causing injury. When many serious injures can occur at much lower speeds, and those areas should have just as much focus on them, but unfortunatly it seems like it is to difficult to do more than attack speed.

If you hit any of the above at more than 60k you're pretty well stuffed anyway so might as well add another hundy on.

My one was on a closed urban road, complete with curbing, lamposts, and buildings with no protection 10 feet from the road, on a circut no longer used. No tortoise shells required back then, in fact if you wanted one you imported it at high cost.

That we are, and have seen the end results of a workmate hitting a u turning car at 50k on a recently restored Norton, was not pretty (he did recover eventually), but then he was doing the speed limit so you can't blame speed.

So far in over 30 years on the road I am yet to hit another moving vehicle, it's called driving to the conditions, being aware of where you are and concentrating on what you are doing.

Depending on where you leave the road ... 170 k's can send you a fair distance from the road.

Not finding her .. doesn't mean that didn't happen ...
