the problem with a lot of the suggestions for book to film that people are making is that they are pretty much un-filmable. Stories too big, universes that need too much explaining. Remember to get a film greenlit you need to convince a listed company to part with a big wad o'cash. Which is why we need to cherish something like DISTRICT 9, (and why I am looking forward to ELYSIUM so much).

Which is why something like Iain M Banks' Culture novels just wouldnt work. You would have to strip the stories down so much they would be nonsensical.

I was disappointed with District 9 after all the hype.
It was really just a clash-of-cultures movie using cool special effects.

I was just googlin to see if they made ST3 and it turns out they even made it to ST4. Wonder if anyone here ever made it past 2? Come on, there's gotta be at least one sad fuck out there.

Probably. I found them all very tedious. Seriously 2001: the first half with the monkeys is boring, the middle bit with the space station and the Discovery is cool, and the last little acid flashback stuff is just tedious. Talk about lay your message on with a trowel.

Theres a film called CONTACT starring Jodie Foster than no one has seen which deals with that whole "Its not only stranger than you imagine, its stranger than you can imagine" scenario. That is much better.

I just dont get the adoration for Kubrick in general. There, I said it.

Every so often the wife and I pull out Babylon 5 and watch one a day for months
Lexx - Xenia Seeberg was a much better actor but when Eva Habermann left the series went downhill, after all, nobody watched it for the acting.

Sunshine - good movie, even had Cliff Curtis in it
Moon - loved it
Total Recall - the remake. Some of the ideas in this were brilliant and pretty much everything about it was spot on
Dredd - the Judge Dredd character is so well defined that there's no room to develop the character so it's the other characters that provide all of the drama, cos you know what Judge Dredd is gonna do. Brilliant and I can't wait for more of the same
Prometheus - loved it. Over the years I've fired the idea that the human race is a mistake at my wife repeatedly but she prefers the Big Book of Historic Fiction's ideas on things.
Iron Sky - kinda Steam Punk but in the 1940's with Nazi's. Loved it
Battlestar Galatica - Blood and Chrome - fairly decent prequel
Equilibrium - most people hated it but I thought it was a wonderful exploration of the ideas presented

I'll stop now. Starting to read like a pompous, full of it movie critic.

Stephen Donaldsons "Thomas Covenant" series

And a goodie but pretty good is David Feintuchs "Hope" books - a modern day space Hornblower
